Anaheim Trades Sgarbossa To Florida For Shaw

Today the Anaheim Ducks traded center Michael Sgarbossa to the Florida Panthers for right-wing Logan Shaw.

Sgarbossa played in nine games in Anaheim recording two assists and no goals. He had an on-ice rating of -2. He also appeared in two games with the San Diego Gulls. He scored one goal and had an on-ice rating of +1. While in Anaheim, he played as the fourth line center with Ryan Garbutt, Jared Boll, and Chris Wagner. Anaheim originally acquired Sgarbossa from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Mat Clark on March 2, 2015.

Logan Shaw is a right-handed right-wing that played in 53 regular season games during the 2015-16 campaign. He recorded seven points(2G+5A), 13 penalty minutes, and had an on-ice rating of -7. He also played in three playoff games last season recording no points. This season Shaw has recorded six points(4G + 2A) in 13 games with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League (AHL). Shaw was tied for the team lead in goals scored and ranked third in shots on net (30).

Analysis:

The Ducks traded Sgarbossa for a player with a little bit more NHL experience. Sgarbossa has played in a combined 19 regular season games with Colorado and Anaheim. Shaw has played in 53 regular season games and three playoff games. Shaw also brings more size standing 6’3″ tall and weighing 202 pounds. Sgarbossa is 6’0″ tall and weighs 186 pounds. In addition to his size, Shaw brings a solid shot and ability to work the cycle game along the boards.

In terms of the Anaheim lineup, Sgarbossa was the fourth line center. Nate Thompson is still not due back for a few months, so Chris Wagner could fill in that position for now. Sources close to Wagner have stated that he is still in Anaheim as of today. The Ducks could call up another player from San Diego, but there aren’t really any viable options at the center position. As for Shaw, it is not known yet whether he will play in Anaheim or San Diego. If he stays in Anaheim, then he will likely play right-wing on the fourth line. He could also be sent to San Diego for more added depth as he doesn’t need to pass through waivers.

In regard to the financial impact, there isn’t much of a difference in terms of their contracts. Sgarbossa’s contract is $600,000 and Shaw’s is $660,000. So even if Shaw is assigned to San Diego, the cap space gained will be minimal.
