Ducks Push Winning Streak To Three Against Canucks

The Anaheim Ducks began a western Canada trip with their fist stop in Vancouver to face the Canucks. John Gibson was in net for the Ducks and Ryan Miller went for the Canucks.

First Period

The opening period saw no scoring and no penalties. Anaheim did start the period strong taking the first seven shots of the game and constantly trying to create scoring chances. It Vancouver over nine minutes before they could register their first shot on net. Ryan Kesler had a wrap around chance just before the period ended, but he didn’t score. The shots favored Anaheim 10 to 5, with no goals scored.

Second Period

The Ducks opened up the scoring when Jakob Silfverberg took a pass and lasered the puck just over Miller’s shoulder and under the crossbar. Cam Fowler earned an assist on the goal, passing Chris Kunitz for 10th place on the all-time scoring list for Anaheim. Later in the period, the Ducks extended their lead with Ondrej Kase scored his first career NHL goal. He took the puck behind the net and threw it in front deflecting off a Vancouver player and into the net. Kase had been close several to scoring this past and finally he was able to get the first goal of his young career. Anaheim also weathered three Vancouver power plays and took a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Shots favored Vancouver in the period 12-10.

Third Period

To start the final period, the Ducks tighten up the defense not giving the Canucks many opportunities. It looked like Gibson may cruise to a shutout in this contest, but with just over seven minutes to go a clearing attempt by Anaheim took a strange bounce off the glass to Loui Eriksson. He was in the middle of the ice and found Henrik Sedin at the side of the net for an easy tap-in goal. It was an unfortunate break for the Gibson and the Ducks. After that score, Vancouver was energized and applied plenty of pressure to try to tie the game. Andrew Cogliano put the game away however with just under three minutes to go with a goal that Miller probably wish he could have back. Cogliano fired the puck between Miller’s leg pads, which Miller was able to get a piece of, but the puck still got by him and just inside the post. Ducks went on to win 3-1.

Analysis

The Ducks played a solid game from start to finish. It was the kind of effort Anaheim needs to have on a regular basis. Anaheim didn’t give up too many quality scoring chances and shut down Vancouver on their power play chances. Gibson and the Ducks nearly shut out the Canucks if not for the odd bounce off the glass in the middle of the third period. Gibson played well again, coming off his 39 save performance two nights ago against Montreal.

Game Notes/Stats

Cam Fowler‘s assist gave him 193 career points as an Anaheim Duck. He is now 10th on the all-time scoring list, passing Chris Kunitz.

Ondrej Kase scored his first NHL goal after several close calls.

Jakob Silfverberg scored his eighth goal, which is tied for second on the team with Ryan Kesler.

Anaheim has their first three-game winning streak of the season.

The Ducks continue the road trip against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday at 7 PM PT.
