Practice Report: Life Without Getzlaf
By Michael Walters
This past week the Anaheim Ducks played three games at home without their captain Ryan Getzlaf. The Ducks went 2-1-0, winning two games against Detroit and Arizona. They dropped the most recent game to Minnesota. This season the Ducks are 4-2-0 when Getzlaf hasn’t played.
At today’s practice head coach Randy Carlyle focused on the power play unit, which went 0-for-10 this week without Getzlaf. For the season the Ducks are 5-for-19 on the power play when Getzlaf hasn’t played in a contest. At practice, this is how the power play units looked:
1st unit: Ryan Kesler, Nick Ritchie, Rickard Rakell, Cam Fowler and Sami Vatanen.
2nd unit: Antoine Vermette, Corey Perry, Jakob Silfverberg, Brandon Montour, and Hampus Lindholm/Kevin Bieksa
Getzlaf and Nate Thompson both skated together at practice before the team hit the ice. Carlyle hopes Getzlaf will skate with the team tomorrow. Thompson is still approximately at least month away from being ready.
On this week’s podcast, Eddy and I talk about the Ducks play without Getzlaf. We take a look at the younger players that are having an impact on the Anaheim roster. We also discuss the World Junior Championship and how Anaheim’s prospect Troy Terry helped Team USAÂ earn gold. Additionally, we look at how Randy Carlyle has performed so far this season and how Anaheim can improve for the second half of the season.
