Interview: Boyle Discusses His New Goalie Mask

I recently caught up San Diego Gulls goalie Kevin Boyle and talked to him about his new mask by Shell Shock Designs.

This slick design has severals tributes on it. First Teemu Selanne is depicted on the left side of the mask. Selanne is present in his 20th-anniversary jersey along with his signature. On the right side, Greg Goldberg is present with the words “Mighty Ducks” and the new Ducks third jersey logo. On the back, the Transformers Autobot logo is present. All three had big influences on Kevin growing up.

Kevin said his family is very important to him and the back of the mask reflects that. The initials on the back represent various members of the Boyle family. The initials JB represent his brother and dad. The initials DB are for his mom. KB is his sister and KR is his fiancé. The date June 29, 2003, is when his “Grandma” passed away. Kevin said, “She was always one of my biggest fans and best friends growing up. So I always wanted to have her looking down on me when I’m on the ice.”

Kevin wore the mask for the first time last night and earned a victory in overtime against the Rockford IceHogs. Kevin stopped 32-of-34 shots and improved to 5-1-1 in his last seven games. Overall this is a great mask by Shell Shock Designs with tributes to Teemu Selanne, the Mighty Ducks movies, Transformers, and most importantly his family.
