VIDEO: Ducks Beat Flames 3-2 Again, Take 2-0 Series Lead

Last night was Game 2 of Round 1. Three nights ago the Ducks took down the Flames 3-2 to take a 1-0 series lead as Jakob Silfverberg would notch the game-winning goal late in the second period. Anaheim would look to take a 2-0 series lead in this game, and to extend the Calgary losing streak in Honda Center to 29 consecutive games. The starting goaltenders would be John Gibson for the Ducks and Brian Elliott for the Flames.

Period 1:

The Ducks would get off to a quick start in this game as Brandon Montour would fly into the zone, only to be bumped off the puck by Flames defenseman Matt Bartkowski, but Silfverberg would corral the puck along the boards and fire one short side past Elliott to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead just 3:21 into the first period. The Ducks would look to keep the pedal to the floor on this Flames team as Rickard Rakell would find the puck behind the Calgary net and stuff the puck in between the pad and post of Elliott to give Anaheim a 2-0 lead just 6:44 into the game. The Ducks would get the game’s first power play chance as Matthew Tkachuk would head to the penalty box on a double minor hi-sticking call. Anaheim would be looking to take advantage of the power play and put the Flames away early, but Mikael Backlund had other plans. With less than two minutes to play in the period, Michael Frolik would spot Backlund in the neutral zone and deliver a strike that would send him in on a short-handed breakaway and would put the puck over a sprawled out Gibson to cut the lead in half. The first period horn would sound and the Ducks would take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Period 2:

The Ducks begin the second period with a 2-1 lead and 2:42 worth of power play time due to the hi-sticking double minor given to Tkachuk near the end of the first. Anaheim would be unsuccessful in converting on their power play chance and would surrender a short-handed goal in the process. It wouldn’t take long for Calgary to get their first power play chance of the night as Kevin Bieksa would take a seat for Anaheim due to a slashing call. The Flames would get off to a rocky start on their first power play but with 14 seconds left on the man advantage Sean Monahan would cap off the tic-tac-toe passing that by firing the puck past Gibson to tie the game up at two. Just under three minutes later the Flames thought that they had taken the lead as a net-front scramble would see the puck slip into the net past Gibson moments before the net came off the pegs. Upon further review from Toronto, it was determined that there was goaltender interference, no goal. A little less than five minutes later the Ducks would be heading back to the box as Ryan Getzlaf would be on the receiving end of a goaltender interference call. The Flames would look to take advantage of the situation and take the lead, but the Anaheim penalty kill would be up for the task and killing off the penalty to keep the game dead-locked at two. Some fists would start flying near the end of the period as Bieksa would square off with Michael Ferland. meanwhile, Ryan Kesler, and Sam Bennett would each get two minutes for roughing. The second period horn would sound and we would head to the intermission tied at two.

Period 3:

We would begin the third period skating four-on-four due to the coincidental minors handed out at the end of the second period. Calgary would keep up the pressure on Anaheim as the possessed the puck for nearly half the third period, but a mishap past the midway point of the third would see Anaheim get their third power play of the night as Dougie Hamilton would head to the box on a holding the stick call against Corey Perry. The Ducks would be looking strike on their third power play of the evening. The captain would come up big for Anaheim, 41 seconds into the power play Getzlaf would take a loose puck off the boards send a pass towards Silfverberg that would end up hitting the skate of Lance Bouma and over the shoulder of Elliott into the net to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead with just 4:46 to play in the game. The Flames would not be out of the woods yet as TJ Brodie would be sent to the box on a cross-checking call against Kesler with just 2:38 remaining in the game. The Ducks would not be successful in converting on their fourth man advantage of the night but would take the game clock down to 38 seconds. A scary moment for Anaheim as Hampus Lindholm would go to clear a puck, but would inadvertently send the puck directly to Johnny Gaudreau, Gaudreau would end up passing the puck in the direction of Gibson and Josh Manson would fire the puck the length of the ice for an icing call with just 8.9 seconds remaining in the game. Kesler would win the defensive zone draw and Getzlaf would clear the puck to seal the 3-2 victory and a 2-0 series lead.

Final Score: Flames-2 Ducks-3

Led by their captain, the Ducks would secure a 3-2 win and a huge 2-0 series lead heading to Canada for games three and four at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. The suspects from game one got it done for Anaheim again tonight as Silfverberg would open the scoring for his second goal of the playoffs, and Rakell would pot his second goal of the playoffs, and Getzlaf would pot the game-winning goal for his second goal of the post-season. Rookie defenseman Brandon Montour would score his first NHL playoff point with an assist on the opening goal by Silfverberg.
