The Anaheim Duck announced today that they have given head coach Randy Carlyle a one-year contract extension through the 2018-19 NHL season. There is also an option for Carlyle to sign on for the 2019-2020 season as well.

“We made great strides this past season and clearly Randy was at the center of that,” said General Manager Bob Murray. “He’s committed to this organization and to winning another Stanley Cup. Extending his contract was an easy decision for us.”

Trent Yawney and Rich Preston will return next season as the Assistant Coaches. Todd Marchant will resume the role of Directer of Player Development and Special Projects.

The Ducks did part ways with Assistant Coach Paul MacLean. The Ducks announced yesterday afternoon that they have “mutually parted ways” with MacLean following the expiration of his contract which ended today. Much concern seems to be surrounded by the special teams play of Anaheim during the playoffs. The Ducks scored only seven times in 54 situations during 17 postseason games, which was a poor 12.9% efficiency. Granted many teams played less games than the Ducks in the playoffs, but Anaheim ranked 13th out of the 16 teams that were in the postseason. The Anaheim penalty kill was 76.6%, which was ranked 14th out of the 16 teams.

MacLean was a former Jack Adams Award winner when he coached the Ottawa Senators. He should land himself another NHL coaching position soon despite the recent poor special teams in Anaheim.
