NHL Trade Deadline: Anaheim Aftermath
By Michael Walters
Today was the NHL trade deadline and it was an exciting one unless you are an Anaheim Ducks fan.
There were several players that the Ducks were reported to be interested in some of which included Thomas Vanek, Erik Karlsson, and Evander Kane. The day got more interesting when reports were that Anaheim was in on Max Pacioretty from Montreal. Jack Johnson‘s name came up as well. As the morning progressed, however, nothing of significance happened for Anaheim. Karlsson stayed in Ottawa, Kane was traded to San Jose, and Vanek was traded to Columbus. Pacioretty ended up staying in Montreal and Johnson stayed in Columbus.
Today the Ducks only made one move which was sending Chris Wagner to the New York Islanders for Jason Chimera. Over the past weekend, the Ducks ended up signing Chris Kelly, a former NHLer, who had just competed in the Winter Olympics for Canada’s ice hockey team. Those were the only two moves the Ducks made.
Ducks General Manager Murray held a brief press conference today and had this to say about acquiring Chimera and Kelly:
“We have definitely become quicker with those two, and they both have good playoff experience, obviously. With their quickness is an energy and leadership. Chris has been to lots of playoffs, and he’s been a captain. With Jason, we’ve known him for a long time, and he brings energy and emotion. That’s something we can use in our group right now.”
Murray had this to say about trading assets at the deadline:
“I wasn’t going to move a first round-pick this year, and certain other young assets I didn’t want to move. We moved a first last year, and I didn’t want to this year. There were certain young assets that were asked for, and there were certain things we were just not going to do at this point in time.”
