Ducks Draft Isac Lundestrom; Fire Konowalchuk
By Michael Walters
The first round of the NHL Draft is complete and the Ducks selected Isac Lundestrom as their 23rd overall pick in the opening round.
Lundestrom, 18, is listed at 6-foot, 183 pounds, and can play left wing or center. Last year he appeared in 42 games with Lulea of the Swedish pro league and had six goals and nine assists in 42 games.
He has a solid two-way game and the speed to match it. In addition to being fast, he is aggressive and very strong on the forecheck. When given the chance to score at close range, he takes advantage with a quick release. Lundestrom brings a physical style of play but does it in a disciplined manner.
“He’s a real good, solid hockey player,” General Manager Bob Murray said in a quote provided by the team. “He plays the right way, a solid two-way player. He had a great World Junior tournament and that’s saying something. Very bright. We are really happy with him.”
Given the health concern with Ryan Kesler and aging Ryan Getzlaf, it’s important the Ducks look to keep the depth at the center position strong for the near future.
Konowalchuk Relieved of His Duties
The Anaheim Ducks announced today that assistant coach Steve Konowalchuk has been relieved of his duties with the organization. He was with the Ducks for one season. He was let go earlier in the week and who will replace him is uncertain at this point. It appears the poor special teams play, especially the power play last season was a factor in this decision.
