The Anaheim Ducks acquired forward Daniel Sprong from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Marcus Pettersson.

Sprong, 21, was drafted by the Penguins in the second round, 46th overall, in the 2015 NHL entry draft. He is a right winger who shoots right and is approximately 6’0″ and 180 pounds. He has played in 16 games this season earning 4 assists. He has played a total of 42 NHL games scoring 9 points (4 goals and 5 assists).

Sprong signed a two-year, $1.5 million contract with the Penguins on June 28, 2018. He will become a restricted free agent after the 2019/2020 season.

Pettersson was selected in the second round of the draft(38 overall) by the Anaheim Ducks in 2014. He has played in 27 games this season scoring 6 assists and has played a total of 49 NHL games scoring 10 points (1 goal and 10 assists).

Sprong is described as an offensive-minded forward that can set up scoring chances for teammates. He is responsible defensively as well. He is a very hard working and wants to improve his game. (Elite Prospects).

Sprong seemed to be underutilized with the Penguins. He has a great work ethic and will have the opportunity to have success in Anaheim. Pettersson has been playing well for the Ducks this season but with a surplus of young talented defensemen, he seems like he was the odd man out. He will add size to the Penguins blue line and we wish him all the best.

I think this one will be a “time will tell deal.” I would learn more in favor of the Ducks winning because they have a good track record for having other struggling players to produce. He has a lot of potential and I think this trade might help him to reach that potential. I’m looking forward to see what he brings.

His jersey number will be 11. Welcome to the Ducks, Sprong!
