VIDEO: Ducks Blanked By Oilers

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks continued their homestand against the Edmonton Oilers. John Gibson was in net against Cam Talbot. Cam Fowler started in this game after being out for several weeks with multiple facial fractures.

First Period

The Ducks started the game with good chances by Jakob Silfverberg, Ondrej Kase, and Nick Ritchie, but couldn’t score. Edmonton got on the board first when Connor McDavid was able to bank a puck off Gibson’s arm and into the net. Later in the period, Jesse Puljujarvi would make a no-look backhand shot in front of the net, which would beat Gibson five-hole and hit the post before going in. The Ducks had a chance to get back into the game late in the period with a power play, but a turnover led to a shorthanded goal by Kyle Brodziak. Ducks ended the period down 3-0.

Second Period

Anaheim started the middle frame on the power play, but couldn’t convert. After seven minutes of play, the Ducks made another turnover resulting in a goal by Leon Draisaitl. The Ducks did get a power play chance, but couldn’t get anything past Talbot. The physical play did pick up in this period as the Ducks were frustrated, but they still trailed 4-0 going into the third period.

Third Period

The Ducks were awarded a power play just a few minutes into the period but again couldn’t get one past Talbot. Anaheim tried to at least get on the board and had a few chances. Ryan Kesler had a great chance in the final minutes of the game, but he hit the post. Kesler and the Ducks couldn’t break through and ended up losing 4-0.

Analysis

The Ducks had energy to start the game, but the Oilers were able to get two goals to build momentum for their team. Anaheim had a chance to take of that momentum back at the end of the period with a power play, but a shorthanded goal by Edmonton just put Anaheim in a bigger hole. The Ducks were able to outshoot the Oilers in this game, but turnovers cost them two goals in this contest. Anaheim also couldn’t get anything going on the power play, which has continued to struggle. Ryan Getzlaf wasn’t much of a factor again as he now gone seven games without recording a single point.
