VIDEO: Ducks End Their Losing Streak

By Richard Gonzalez

The Anaheim Ducks took on the Minnesota Wild. The Ducks were looking to get their first win in 2019, and to end their 12 game losing streak. Recently traded Ducks forward, Pontus Aberg will make his debut with the Wild and promising Ducks prospect, Max Jones makes his NHL debut. John Gibson will make his 40th appearance in net and Alex Stalock will start for the Wild.

First Period:

Jones and Troy Terry looked good in their opening shift. They came out flying and gave the Ducks some energy. The Ducks would strike first when Adam Henrique fired a shot past Stalock. The helpers would come from Nick Ritchie and Brandon Montour. 11 seconds later, Rickard Rakell would score to make it 2-0, Ducks. The helpers came from newly acquired Devin Shore and Montour. The Ducks would extend their lead to 3-0 when Brian Gibbons tipped a shot from Andy Welinski. The Wild would pull Stalock after that and bring Devan Dubnyk in the game. The Ducks took a too many men on the ice penalty at the 5:00 mark, served by Daniel Sprong. The Ducks would kill that. Ryan Suter and Nick Seeler would each take slashing calls at 5:26 and 10:54 marks of the game, which their team would kill off. Josh Manson would take the period’s last penalty at the 13:43 mark for cross-checking. The Ducks would end the first outshooting the Wild, 13-10, and are up 3-0.

Second Period:

The second period slowed down a bit but the Ducks still came attacking the Wild’s net. Each team exchanged rushes throughout the early minutes of the first. The Wild almost scored on a wrap-around. The puck almost cleared the red paint until Gibson used his paddle to knock the puck from going in. Manson would clear the puck and the icing call gave the Ducks time to breath. Jones lays a big hit on Marcus Foligno. Dubnyk makes his best save of the game on a low shot from Rakell. The Ducks did a good job on not allowing the Wild to get behind them. Forced them to make wide shots on Gibson. Cam Fowler gets called for hi-sticking at the 18:34. The Wild did outshoot the Ducks and had a good drive but Gibson turned them away and the clock expired.

Third Period:

The Ducks started off killing the remaining seconds of a penalty. The Wild came out firing to start the period; however, Gibson answered the call on each shot. At the 3:12 mark, Mikko Koivu takes a tripping penalty and sends the Ducks on the power play for the third time tonight. The Ducks don’t convert but get their fourth chance when Jonas Brodin gets called for hi-sticking. An unfortunate moment happens when Ondrej Kase gets hurt off the face-off against Charlie Coyle. Coyle’s stick appears to have struck Kase in the leg. Kase would head to the Ducks locker room. Things continue to go lower for the Ducks when Montour takes a hooking penalty. The Wild controlled more of the game and spent more time in the Ducks zone, but Gibson continued to do Gibson things. The Wild wouldn’t be able to break the wall and the Ducks would FINALLY break their 12 game losing streak and get their first win n 2019.

Analysis:

The Ducks came out firing to start the game. The new additions, to include the recent call-ups, played with some much-needed drive and energy. The Ducks took advantage of Stalock by blitzing him with a fury of shots. “Enough is enough,” Gibson said via the post-game interview on Fox Sports West. Terry was moving around and kept finding his way to the puck like a magnet. Jones looked really comfortable and made his physical presence known. Terry was afraid to be sent down at the beginning of the season but has said it was the best thing to happen to him and he isn’t afraid of that anymore, per Fox Sports West. The Ducks got a much-needed win; however, they resorted to their old ways by not playing a full game. They didn’t have that same drive as they did in the first and were lucky that Gibson bailed them out. I’m glad to launch this monkey off our backs but the Ducks still need to work on playing a full complete game.
