VIDEO: Ducks End Panthers’ Winning Streak

The Anaheim Ducks hosted the Florida Panthers tonight at Honda Center. With the Panthers coming off of a season-best winning streak, the Ducks looked to continue their role as the “spoilers” in this game. John Gibson (.916 SV%) was in net against rookie goaltender Sam Montembeault (.906 SV%).

Period 1

The first period began with a dangerous scoring chance by Max Jones (1-1-2) but he was slashed in front of the net. Mark Pysyk (1-10-11) served the game’s first penalty. After a shot rebounded from Nick Ritchie (9-21-30), Devin Shore (8-18-26) found the back on the net and gave Anaheim an early lead at 1-0. The period continued with a lot of back-and-forth battles in the neutral zone so the shot count remained low. Several scoring opportunities were generated by the Corey Perry (5-4-9) and Troy Terry (4-6-10) line, most notably when the puck was inches from crossing the goal line as Perry crashed into the net. This opening period ended at a score of 1-0 in favor of the Ducks.

Period 2

Just over ten seconds into the second period, a back-handed pass from Jonathan Huberdeau (23-53-72) to Evgenii Dadonov (24-33-57) tied the game at 1-1. Florida had a brief offensive push that was broken up by a tripping penalty on Evgenii Dadonov. Though the Ducks couldn’t convert on their second power play of the night, they built strong momentum that continued after the penalty expired. One of the Ducks’ shots on goal hit Corey Perry (5-4-9) in the ribs with 10 minutes remaining. He went straight to the locker room. Soon afterward, Ryan Getzlaf (13-31-44) received a slashing penalty, giving the Panthers their first power play of the game. They couldn’t take advantage of the extra man. Two minutes later, Perry returned to the ice for an odd-man rush with Adam Henrique (16-21-37). Henrique scored and Anaheim regained its lead at 2-1. Near the end of the period, Ryan Getzlaf and Jonathan Huberdeau (23-53-76) were simultaneously given tripping penalties. Two minutes of 4-on-4 hockey ensued. Both penalties expired and the period ended soon afterward. Though Anaheim ended this period in the lead, the Panthers were ahead by 9 shots on goal.

Period 3

Three minutes into the final period, a Panthers odd-man rush allowed Aaron Ekblad (12-21-33) to receive a pass from Jonathan Huberdeau (23-53-76) and find the back of the net. This tied the game at 2-2. Florida continued to dominate play following their goal and nearly scored again on several occasions. With five minutes remaining, Jakob Silfverberg (21-12-32) shot with his backhand off of a pass from Rickard Rakell (11-21-32) and scored. This gave Anaheim their third lead of the night at 3-2. The Ducks managed to hang on to their final lead and win the game.

Post-Game Analysis

The Florida Panthers dominated the scoring chances in tonight’s game, illustrated by their 39 shots on goal against Anaheim’s 22. Ryan Getzlaf had yet another strong game with 2 assists, 2 hits, and 1 key blocked shot. Tonight’s win has placed the Anaheim Ducks 4 points ahead of the New Jersey Devils, 7 points ahead of the Detroit Red Wings, 9 points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings, and 11 points ahead of the Ottawa Senators.
