Faulk Trade Talk Heats Up In Anaheim
By Michael Walters
Earlier today talks of a trade between Anaheim and Carolina involving Justin Faulk intensified according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Part of the details that have to be worked out is the fact that Faulk has a partial No-Trade Clause(NTC), which would require him to approve a move to Anaheim. The details of the return include Ondrej Kase as part of the deal according to Luke DeCock of the News & Observer and Sara Civian of the Athletic. The Hurricanes have had interest in Kase for some extended period of time now.
Another part of the discussion involves Anaheim giving Faulk an extension according to the Athletic’s Eric Stephens. Faulk is entering the final year of his sixth year deal with Carolina, so getting an extension with guaranteed term and money may be the key to getting him to waive the NTC to come to Anaheim.
The Anaheim Ducks have Cam Fowler, Josh Manson, and Hampus Lindholm as their top three defensemen. Manson is the Ducks top right-handed defenseman. After him, the Ducks have Chris Wideman and Korbinian Holzer. So it makes sense that GM Bob Murray is trying to add to the d-core by bringing in a right-handed defenseman to have a top 4 competitive d-core. In the last five seasons, Faulk has averaged just over 13 goals and just under 38 total points per season.

The question is what is Murray offering up beside Kase. The idea of giving up Kase is a hard pill to swallow. I spoke to Kase this past weekend and he said he is ready to go since his injury last year. Murray still may have some concerns with him because of his concussion issues, which might be why he could part with him. Anaheim does have a good amount of talent upcoming in the forward position so a trade involving Kase would be in order to help improve the Ducks defensively.
According to CapFriendly, the Ducks have $8.5 million in cap space, not counting the LTIR for Ryan Kesler and Patrick Eaves. Faulk’s current cap hit is $4.833 million. So the Ducks can afford to trade for Faulk and give him an extension with Kase being offered and especially if another player(s) is/are part of the deal. Also if Faulk comes to Anaheim then he is going to need to select a new number since 27 has been retired by the Anaheim organization for Scott Niedermayer.
Patrik Laine Trade Talks
There has also been plenty of talks lately about Laine being traded. My sources are saying there are 3-5 teams in the Eastern Conference that are vying for him. No one connected to the Anaheim organization has confirmed or denied that the Ducks are trying to acquire him. It’s not impossible that Anaheim could try to get Laine, but it doesn’t seem probable. The Ducks have plenty of young talent at the forward position ready to step up this season. Anaheim really needs to add to the defense and Faulk could provide a solid boost.
