VIDEO: Capitals Spit Their Way Past Anaheim

By Michael Walters

The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip in the Nation’s Capital against Washington. The Ducks were coming off a solid 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues. John Gibson was in net against Braden Holtby.

The Capitals would score to open this game up just 50 seconds into the contest. Richard Panik would take a wrist shot that beat Gibson high glove side. Alex Ovechkin doubled the Caps’ lead in the second period with a power-play goal.

Washington would then get a third goal towards the end of the second period and a melee ensued. Chandler Stephenson took a point shot that beat Gibson while just about everyone else on the ice was fighting behind the net. There was some confusion as to whether the goal would count and eventually the referees did credit it to Washington.

Garnet Hathaway delivered a big hit on Derek Grant, which the Ducks took exception too. During the scrum, Erik Gudbranson and Hathaway would lock up and start arguing. Gudbranson gave Hathaway a small jab to the face and then Hathaway answered by spitting in Gudbranson’s face. Hathaway was booted from the game with a match penalty. Washington led 3-0 after two periods.

At the beginning of the third period, the Ducks scored a goal by Rickard Rakell, but the referees called it off due to goalie interference. The Capitals would then score once more to take a 4-0 lead. Anaheim was able to eventually get a pair of goals by Sam Steel and then a late tally by Nicolas Deslauriers. But it wasn’t enough and the Capitals added an empty-net goal to win 5-2.

Team Stats/News:

Sam Steel scored his first goal of the season.
