Gulls Bi-Weekly Report 4

Logo: San Diego Gulls

By Thomas Harrington

The San Diego Gulls finished off the month of November by going 1-2-1 over the past two weeks. While that’s a step back from their recent hot streak, the Gulls are playing much better hockey and put up eight wins in the month of November.

Stockton Downs San Diego

The Gulls started things off by hosting the Stockton Heat. Through most of the first period, neither team found the back of the net, but Jack Kopacka gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead with just a couple of minutes left in the first period. Unfortunately, Stockton owned the second period, as they scored four times, including a goal in the first few minutes and a goal in the last few minutes of the period. Neither team scored in the third, and San Diego lost this one 4-1.

Gulls Lose In Overtime

The Gulls then hosted the Barracuda in a tight contest. Late in the first, Chris Wideman gave San Diego the 1-0 lead, but San Jose scored early in the second to tie the game. Halfway through the period, Alex Dostie put San Diego back on top. In the third, the Barracuda tied the game with less than four minutes to go in regulation. The game remained tied and it went to overtime. In the extra session, San Jose scored the winner to take the 3-2 win.

Gulls Lose In Final Minutes

The Gulls then traveled to Ontario to take on their rivals, the Reign. Neither team scored in the first, but Dostie gave San Diego the lead less than two minutes into the second period. Ontario tied the game up halfway through the period. In the third, neither team could find the back of the net and it looked like the game would head to overtime, but with just over a minute left in regulation, Ontario scored and won the game 2-1.

Gulls Take Out Tuscon

The Gulls then returned home to face Tucson, the top team in the Pacific Division. Less than four minutes into the game, Blake Pietila made it 1-0, but Tucson tied the game up less than seven minutes later. Late in the period, Sam Carrick and Daniel Sprong both scored to give San Diego a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes. Early in the second, Dostie scored in his third straight game to make it 4-1. Tucson responded with a goal of their own later in the period to make it 4-2. In the third, Carrick and Chase De Leo both scored to give San Diego the 6-2 win.

Podcast: What The Duck?

Over the next two weeks, the Gulls will play in five games. They’ll start things off by hosting Colorado and Grand Rapids. The Gulls will then travel to Colorado for a pair of games, before returning home to face Grand Rapids again.

Over the last four games, Dostie has three goals, and for the first time in his career could be on Anaheim’s radar for a callup. Carrick continues his strong play and is another player who could get a game or two of NHL action as well. Wideman has been an offensive force from the blueline and he could get a chance in Anaheim.

There were a few roster moves made in the past couple of days. Josh Mahura and Max Comtois were called up to Anaheim. Anthony Stolarz was also called up since John Gibson was out with an illness for Anaheim’s game against Los Angeles this past Monday. Stolarz should be sent back to San Diego soon. Also, Max Jones was reassigned to the Gulls. Jones has been sent down a few times this season as he continues to try to find consistency in his offensive game.

The Gulls have cooled off after their hot streak that saw them win seven times in eight games. The good news is that they are no longer at the bottom of the Pacific Division. The bad news is that they still have a long way to go. Beating the best team in the division is a good step towards climbing up the Pacific, and hopefully, something for them to build on in December.
