Rewind: Ducks 2019 Trade Deadline

Photo: AP

By Richard Gonzalez

The annual NHL trade deadline is fast approaching and it seems like a lot of teams are buying and selling early. The last few days have been fairly active with New Jersey going on a full fire sale. The San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings are unloading expiring contracts for draft picks and prospects. It does not seem to be slowing down one bit either. The Anaheim Ducks, to no surprise, have been super quiet.

Let’s rewind and take a look back at last year’s trade deadline and the deals leading up to it.

Ducks General Manager, Bob Murray made four separate trades from January 14-17. He also made one deal the day before the trade deadline. Those deals included the following:

2019 Pre-Deadline Deals

01/14/2019 Ducks Trade Andrew Cogliano For Devin Shore

Note: This was the first trade of 2019 that the Ducks received a player. They made a smaller transaction at the beginning of the year when they sent Jared Coreau to the St. Louis Blues for future considerations, my favorite unknown player.

Shore played in 34 games last season scoring 12 points (five goals and seven assists). This season, he has nine points (three goals and six assists) in 36 games. This season, Cogliano has 13 points (two goals and 11 assists) in 58 games played.

At first, this was a major blow because Cogliano was a fan favorite; however, it was not that bad of a trade. The Ducks got a little cap relief and a received a younger player. Shore just hasn’t been able to be consistently in the lineup and had been a healthy scratch numerous times. The most consecutive games he played has been the past six games where he has a goal and two assists. He does not seem to be in the Ducks’ future plans. As a fan perspective, I think the Stars take the win on this one.

01/16/2019 Ducks Trade Pontus Aberg For Justin Kloos

Kloos only played a game last season with the Ducks and did not score any points. He played 25 games with the San Diego Gulls and scored 15 points (six goals and nine assists). In total, including his time with the Iowa Wild, he scored 45 points. He also added nine points in 16 playoff games with the Gulls. This season he has played in 46 games and scored 25 points (ten goals and 15 assists). Aberg was claimed off waivers by the Ducks last season and played in 37 games scoring 19 points (11 goals and eight assists). He only had six points in 37 games with the Wild. Aberg signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and has played in 45 games with their affiliate team, scoring 40 points (17 goals and 23 assists) in 45 games.

It was rumored that there was some locker room problems and that was a reason for the trade. Kloos has played pretty well with the Gulls but Aberg seems to have a lot more upside and NHL potential. I feel like the Ducks should have held on to him a little longer to see if they could have got that potential out of him.

01/17/2019 Ducks Trade Joseph Blandisi For Derek Grant

Grant played in 25 games with the Penguins last season and 31 games with the Ducks scoring a total of 14 points (four goals and ten assists). This season, Grant has 20 points (14 goals and six assists) in 47 games. This season, Blandisi has played in 21 games with the Penguins scoring five points and 26 games with their affiliate team scoring 14 points. This was probably the best trade of last year that has paid dividends this season.

01/17/2019 Ducks Trade Luke Schenn & 2020 7th Round Pick For Michael Del Zotto

Del Zotto only played in 12 games with the Ducks and had three assists last season.

Schenn played a combined total of 25 games with the Canucks and their affiliate (18 NHL and 7 AHL) and scored six points. I will revisit this trade once we get into the actual deadline deal so keep reading on.

02/24/2019 Ducks Trade Brandon Montour For Brendan Guhle & 2019 First Round Pick (Brayden Tracey)

Guhle played in two games with the Sabres with zero points and six games with the Ducks also with zero points. An injury limited his play so the Ducks did not get to see much from him last season. Montour played in 62 games with the Ducks last season and scored 25 points (five goals and 20 assists). He added 20 games played scoring 10 points (three goals and seven assists) with the Sabres. This season, Guhle has played in 22 games with the Ducks scoring two goals and three assists and 24 games with the Gulls scoring four goals and eight assists.

On the plus side for the Sabres, he has not formally asked for a trade. This trade still rubs me the wrong way. I feel like Montour had a lot of upside and was a player of the future for the Ducks. Tracey has played in 44 games and scored 52 points (18 goals and 34 assists) with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Victoria Royals of the WHL. I think he has a lot of upside and it will be interesting to see his potential when he makes the Ducks roster. This seems like a good return but I still feel like the Ducks could have gotten more and could have gotten a team to overpay.

02/24/2019 Ducks Trade Brian Gibbons For Patrick Sieloff

This season, Sieloff has played in 32 games and scored six points (goal and five assists) with the Gulls and Syracuse Crunch. Gibbons now played for the Carolina Hurricanes organization. He has played a combined 41 games between the two organizations and has 14 points (four goals and 14 assists) all with the Hurricanes affiliate. This trade is just “meh” to me. There is not any winner or loser for this one.

I really do not expect any huge trades coming at the deadline. History does have a way of repeating itself so i can not see Murray making any sort of a splash. Hockey and the deadline can be unpredictable so maybe it will be different this year. The Ducks are not going to make the playoffs and should be focused on loading up on prospects and draft picks. It will be a wait and see for now.

2019 NHL Trade Deadline Deal (2-25-19)

Ducks Trade Michael Del Zotto For 2019 6th Round Pick (Mathew Hill)

Glad you kept reading and this is part two of the Del Zotto trade. So basically the Ducks traded Schenn and a seventh-round draft pick for a sixth-round draft pick. Del Zotto “re-signed” with the Ducks in the post-season and has 11 points (two goals and nine assists) in 37 games with the Ducks. He is sure to grab some attention for this year’s deadline for a team looking for some more depth on their blue line.

Unsigned prospect, Hill has played in 53 games with the Barrie Colts of the OHL and has scored nine points (two goals and 7 assists). Montour has played in 44 games with the Sabres this season and has scored 13 points (three goals and ten assists). This series of translations should be considered a win for the Ducks.

We will be live on the trade deadline day so be sure to join us. If history does repeat itself, we will definitely need fan interaction to keep us company.
