NHL Suspends Season
By Michael Walters
The NHL has announced the season has been suspended beginning with tonight’s games. This comes shortly after the NBA also announced that they suspended their season. At least two NBA players were documented to have contracted the COVID-19 virus.
Due to the growing concern over public health regarding the spread of the virus in large gatherings, the NHL will suspend play indefinitely. League sources originally discussed the possibility of continuing to play in front of empty arenas but then decided to scrap that idea.
As of now, there will be no travel allowed, no meetings, and no practices. All on-ice officials have been directed to return home if they are currently on the road.
The plan initially is to put a halt to the season temporarily. The hope is that the season can resume in 3-4 weeks possibly in mid-April. The AHL and other minor hockey leagues have also suspended their seasons. This is a fluid situation that can change at any moment and we will post updates when they are made.
