Ducks Sign Kodie Curran
By Michael Walters
According to Cap Friendly Kodie Curran has signed a deal with Anaheim. The deal is a 2 year/1-way contract worth $ 2 million, $1 million for 2020-21, and $ 1 million for 2021-22. There are no signing or performance bonuses.
It was first reported on May 25th by the Espressen’s Johan Svensson, that some NHL teams, including Anaheim, had shown interest in Curran. On May 29th, Svensson then stated that Curran would in fact be planning to sign with Anaheim. Today Cap Friendly confirmed the signing. Curran did have a KHL contract lined up, but that was canceled once he signed with Anaheim.
Curran is a 30-year-old Canadian defenseman in the Swedish Hockey League(SHL) who played the last two seasons for Rogle BK Angelholm. He played in 48 games this past year registering 49 total points(12 goals + 37 assists). He had an on-ice rating of +8 and also 67 penalty minutes.
He led all defensemen in the league in scoring and was second overall in the league in scoring. He was awarded the SHL defenseman of the year and also won the Golden Helmet for the most valuable player for 2019-20.
Curran is about 6 feet two inches tall and weighs about 200 pounds. He has the size, a strong two-way game, a solid hockey IQ, and plenty of offensive potential. His only downside is he has been known to sometimes take too many penalties. He also shoots with his left, which will be interesting as Anaheim already plenty of left-handed defensemen already.
In 2014, Curran attended the Tampa Bay Lightning training camp on a tryout basis. He did not make the team and still has not been drafted by the NHL. After spending the following year between the AHL and ECHL, he spent the last four years in Europe. He did win the Danish cup with Esbjerg Energy in the 2016–17 season. He has played in 34 total playoff games in Europe and has shown that he can compete at the playoff level registering 47 total points(18 goals + 29 assists) in those contests.
