Prospect Update: Trevor Janicke
By Thomas Harrington
A fifth round pick from 2019, forward Trevor Janicke completed his sophomore year at the University of Notre Dame this past season.
Janicke scored four goals and 10 points as a sophomore, which represented a slight dip in production from his freshman year when he scored eight goals and 13 points. However, that decrease can at least partially be attributed to him playing in fewer games, as he played in 37 as a freshman but just 29 as a sophomore. He did play in every game for Notre Dame, they just played fewer games because of the pandemic. Janicke played wing as a freshman and started the year there as well, but switched to center for the final 11 games of the year. He recorded his first two-goal game for Notre Dame in March.
Janicke partially met my expectations for him from a year ago. First, I wanted him to play in every game, which he was able to do. Second, I wanted him to increase his offensive production. He missed on that one, but was scoring at a similar rate to his freshman year and even recorded one more assist. If Notre Dame had played in more games, he would have had an excellent chance to meet this expectation. Finally, I was hoping he would make Team USA after just missing out the year before, but he was not chosen for the tournament.
This coming season, Janicke will be back at Notre Dame for his junior year. He’s a player primarily known for his checking prowess, however, if he wants to turn pro after the conclusion of his NCAA career, he’s going to need to start putting up a few more points. He had a solid freshman season, but his sophomore year was a difficult one because of the pandemic.
I have a few expectations for Janicke this coming year. First, to once again play in every game for Notre Dame. He’s been very durable with Notre Dame and I’d like to see that continue. Second, for him to increase his offensive production. Finally, I want him to really blossom as a shut-down center. Moving from wing to center can be difficult, but if he can succeed, he’ll be that much closer to the NHL.
Janicke is currently unsigned and the Ducks own his rights until the summer of 2023. If he can have a strong final season or two of college hockey, I expect the Ducks to ink him to a standard entry-level deal. However, if his offense stalls or declines, I could see them letting him become a free agent when his college career is over.
The next prospect update will be on Jack Perbix.
