Gulls Bi-Weekly Report 6

Graphic: San Diego Gulls

By Thomas Harrington

The Gulls had several games delayed because of the ongoing pandemic and only recently returned to action. Over the last two weeks, the Gulls played in four games and won two of them. Given that they were off for almost three weeks, getting two wins out of four was pretty good for a team trying to get their legs back under them.

Gulls Take Down The Heat

San Diego’s first game back was against Stockton, the best team in the Pacific Division. Neither team scored in the first period, but Hunter Drew and Brayden Tracey scored to give the Gulls a 2-0 lead halfway through the second period. With 11 seconds left in the middle frame, the Heat scored to cut the lead in half. In the third, Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Bryce Kindopp both scored to give the Gulls a 4-1 win.

Reign Edge Gulls In OT

The Gulls then traveled to Ontario to face their rival the Reign. Ontario opened the scoring in the first, but Brent Gates, Jr., playing in his second game this season, scored to tie the game. Early in the second Nikolas Brouillard gave the Gulls the lead, but Ontario tied the game back up. Tracey then put San Diego back on top, but the Reign tied the game again. Finally, Drew scored with 31 seconds left in the period to give San Diego a 4-3 lead after two periods. In the third, Ontario scored the only goal, sending the game to overtime. In the extra period, the Reign scored to win the game 5-4.

San Diego Splits Games Against Abbotsford

The Gulls then faced Abbotsford for a pair of games. The first one was far and away San Diego’s worst over the past two weeks. The Canucks made it 2-0 after the first period, and 3-0 after the second period. Lucas Elvenes, playing in his first game with the Gulls since Anaheim claimed him on waivers, scored for San Diego in the third, but Abbotsford scored two more times, including once with San Diego’s net empty, to win 5-1.

The next night, the Gulls were looking for revenge. Neither team scored in the first, but Drew got the scoring going early in the second, and Tracey made it 2-0. Abbotsford scored with less than a minute to go in the second to make it 2-1. Early in the third, Alex Limoges scored a shorthanded goal and Trevor Carrick added his second of the season to make it 4-1. The Canucks fought back and scored two goals, including one in the final second of regulation, and the Gulls won 4-3.

Final Thoughts

Assuming no more games are postponed, the Gulls will play seven games over the next two weeks. They’ll start on the road with games in San Jose and Stockton, before heading to Abbotsford for a pair of games. They’ll then return home to host Colorado, before heading to Iowa for the final two games.

Between injuries and COVID, a number of San Diego players have made their way to Anaheim in recent weeks. Forwards, defensemen, and even both San Diego goaltenders have all gone up to the NHL at some point recently. That trend will likely continue, so don’t be surprised if Jacob Perreault, Tracey, Kindopp, Groulx, and others get more NHL time in the weeks to come.

The Gulls were hit hard by the pandemic. Hopefully the worst is behind them and they’re able to stay healthy through the rest of the season. They’ve managed to get themselves out of last place in the Pacific Division, but they’ve got a long way to go if they want to make the playoffs this year. With so many games packed into a tight schedule going forward, they’ll have their chances to do so.
