Prospect Update: Carey Terrance
By Thomas Harrington
The Anaheim Ducks selected forward Carey Terrance in the second round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, 59th overall. He spent the past year in the OHL, playing for the Erie Otters, and was named one of their alternate captains at the start of the season.
With the Otters, Terrance played in 56 games and scored 29 goals and 52 points. He scored one fewer goal than the year before, but also played in 11 fewer games while putting up five more points. He finished fourth on the team in points, while playing 10 or fewer games than the three players who finished above him. His 29 goals led the team. In the entire OHL, his 29 goals were tied for 37th in the league. The Otters made the playoffs but lost in the first round to the Kitchener Rangers. Terrance played in all six playoff games and scored two goals and four points. Terrance was also named to Team USA as an injury replacement player at the World Juniors. Team USA didn’t suffer any major injuries and he did not play in any games. The highlight of his season was when he scored two goals in 13 seconds in February.
Terrance is an excellent skater who can really motor down the ice, but he needs to work on his lateral movement. He hasn’t put up a ton of points but plays on a low scoring Eerie team. He can play on both the powerplay and penalty kill, and has the ability to play both center and wing. While he probably won’t ever become a top scorer in the NHL, if he develops properly Terrance could become a very good second or third line player someday.
Terrance is still a number of years away from making it to the NHL. He’s got another year of junior hockey ahead of him, and then he’ll spend some time in the AHL with San Diego before getting a shot in Anaheim. So we’re at least two or three years away, maybe more, from seeing him in a Ducks sweater.
Terrance will be returning to Erie for his fourth and likely final season of junior hockey. As an OHL veteran, more will be expected out of him. First, I want Terrance to lead his team in goals again and hit the 30 goal mark. Second, for him to finish top three on the team in points. Finally, I want him to not just make Team USA’s rosters for the World Juniors, but to play some games for them.
Terrance is currently unsigned and the Ducks control his rights until June 1, 2025. If he can have a strong final season of junior hockey, I have little doubt that the Ducks will sign him to a standard three-year entry-level contract. However, if he struggles with Erie, the Ducks could decide to not sign him and lose his rights going forward.
The next prospect update will be on goaltender Vyacheslav Buteyets.
