Prospect Update: Michael Callow

Photo: Harvard University

By Thomas Harrington

Anaheim chose forward Michael Callow, a fifth round pick from the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, 154th overall. He played his first year of NCAA hockey at Harvard this past season.

Callow played in all 32 of Harvard’s games and scored three goals and 15 points. While he didn’t put up a ton of points, his 12 assists and 15 points were both tied for fourth on the team. He had a career high three points in January, when he scored a goal and had two assists. He picked up his first career assist in his fourth NCAA game and scored his first goal in his 12th game. In January, Callow had a three-game point streak and had two-game point streaks three other times.

I had two expectations for Callow last year, and he met both of them. First, I wanted him to play in most of Harvard’s games, which he was able to do. Almost every time a freshman can play in every game in the NCAA, that’s a great sign for the future. Second, I wanted him to learn to use his size effectively. At 6’4” and over 200 lbs, he has the making of a future power forward, and while he still has room to grow and get stronger, he got better as the season went on and used his size to his advantage more and more. He still has room for improvement in this area, but it’s great to see him improve throughout the season.

Callow will be returning to Harvard for his sophomore season this year. I have a few expectations for his sophomore campaign. First, for him to once again play in all of Harvard’s games. Second, for him to set career highs in goals, assists, and points. Finally, I want him to be one of Harvard’s top three point producers.

Callow is still a number of years away from making it to the NHL. He’ll probably stay in college for another two or three seasons and then look to turn pro. If Anaheim is happy with his development, they’ll sign Callow to an entry-level deal and he’ll go to San Diego for a season or two. If he plays well enough for the Gulls, then he could get a shot at the NHL, but that probably won’t be for another four or five seasons.

Callow is currently unsigned and will be until the conclusion of his college career. The Ducks own his rights until August 15, 2027, so there’s no rush to get him signed. They can let him develop in the NCAA for the next few years. If Anaheim is satisfied with where his game is at, they’ll sign him, but if Callow stagnates or regresses over the next few years, the Ducks will probably let him become a free agent in the summer of 2027.

The next prospect update will be on forward Nico Myatovic.
