Ducks Earn A Point In Montreal
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks started their four game road trip in Montreal. Jacob Trouba made his debut with Anaheim. Lukas Dostal was in net against Sam Montembeault.
Recap
The Canadiens got a power play in the opening minutes of this contest and they converted. Patrik Laine one timed a shot from the side of the net and banked the shot off Dostal’s back for the score.
Montreal went on the power play again about three minutes, but did not convert. Anaheim did score halfway through the period to tie the game. Cam Fowler took a shot that was blocked, but Troy Terry got to the rebound and backhanded the puck in the net for a goal. The teams were tied at one after the first period.
The Ducks got a pair of power plays in the opening minutes of the second period. Anaheim converted on the second power play to take a 2-1 lead. Alex Killorn found Terry in front of the net for the tap in score.
Montreal did answer on the next shift with a goal by Kirby Dach to tie things back up at two apiece. Dostal misplayed a dump-in by Laine that resulted in the goal.
With about two minutes to go in the period, Kaiden Guhle and Ryan Strome dropped the gloves. The teams remained tied at two after two periods.
The Ducks got a power play almost halfway through the third period, but they couldn’t convert. There was no scoring in the period.
This game would need bonus hockey to determine a winner. There was no scoring in overtime, but Terry nearly won it with a shot that rang off the post.
In the shootout, Laine and Cole Caufield both scored to win the game. Mason McTavish and Terry both couldn’t convert on their chances.
Analysis
Troy Terry had a very strong game. The Ducks got down by a goal early on and he answered to tie things up. He then put the Ducks ahead early in the second period on the power play. He nearly won the game in overtime, but his shot went off the post. He led the team with six shots on goal and nearly scored a hat trick.
Jacob Trouba looked solid his debut with Anaheim. He led the game with five hits and was third in total ice time with 22 minutes and 35 seconds. He generated a few scoring chances in the final minute of the third period that could have led to a regulation win. The pairing of Fowler and Trouba seemed to work well.
The Ducks played a very good game at even strength posting 56 shot attempts to 44 for the Canadiens. Anaheim posted a 56% CF% and a 54.17% FF% at even strength. The Ducks had four shots on goal in overtime and nearly won the game. The Canadiens didn’t register a shot on goal in the overtime. If Dostal doesn’t misplay the puck in the second period, Anaheim might have won this one in regulation.
Team Notes/Stats:
Cam Fowler played in his 989th game as a Duck passing Corey Perry for second all-time in franchise history.
Brian Hayward announced his 2000th game for the Anaheim Ducks.
