Gulls Biweekly Report 5
By Thomas Harrington
The San Diego Gulls played six games over the past two weeks and had a record of 2-4-0. The Gulls had a five-game point streak that ended during these past two weeks and have since lost four in a row. Sam Colangelo has returned to San Diego, giving a boost to a struggling offense.
San Diego started out by hosting the Henderson Silver Knights. Henderson scored just over 30 seconds into the contest, but Nikita Nesterenko and Yegor Sidorov scored less than two minutes apart to give the Gulls the lead. The Silver Knights scored again to tie the game before the first was over. In the second period, Sidorov scored his second of the game, and then Jaxsen Wiebe scored his first goal of the season to make it 4-2. Henderson got one back late in the second to make it a one-goal game again. In the third, Judd Caulfield scored to restore the two-goal lead before Henderson scored to make it 5-4. Neither team scored after that and the Gulls walked away with the win.
The Gulls then hosted the San Jose Barracuda, one of the top teams in the Pacific Division. Sidorov scored the only goal of the first, and Tristan Luneau scored his first career AHL goal to make it 2-0 in the second. Jan Mysak and Nathan Gaucher both scored to make it 4-0 before San Jose got on the board late in the middle frame. In the third, the Barracuda scored again, but Colangelo scored into the empty net to give the Gulls a 5-2 win. This was Colangelo’s first game since being reassigned to the Gulls from Anaheim.
The Gulls then hit the road for four straight games, starting with a pair of games in Tucson. In the first game, the Roadrunners scored a goal early in the first period and early in the third period and won 2-0. San Diego were only able to register 17 shots in the loss. In the next game, the Roadrunners scored twice in the opening period, but Sasha Pastujov made it 2-1 early in the second. Tucson then responded with two more goals that period. They finished things off with an empty net goal in the third and won 5-1.
San Diego then traveled to Colorado for a pair of games. In the first game, the Eagles scored a goal in both the first and second periods, before Jan Mysak scored in the third to make it 2-1. Colorado then scored three straight goals, including an empty net goal, and won 5-1. In the final game, Colorado scored to take a 1-0 lead, but Pastujov scored late in the first to tie the game. In the second, the Eagles scored three straight goals before Nico Myatovic scored his first career AHL goal to make it a 4-2 game. In the third, Colorado scored to retake the three-goal lead. Pastujov scored late in regulation and the Gulls lost 5-3.
The San Diego Gulls will play five games over the next two weeks. They’ll start out with three straight games at home, hosting Ontario, Bakersfield, and then San Jose. The Gulls will then hit the road for a pair of games, first in Ontario and then Coachella Valley.
Colangelo leads the Gulls in goals and points and will be the first callup if the Ducks need help at forward. However, both Sidorov and Pastujov scored three goals each over the past two weeks. The Ducks could consider calling up either one of them up as well. On defense, Luneau is the most likely player to get called up, but Tyson Hinds has been called up a couple of times as well and it could happen again.
After a five-game point streak, the Gulls have dropped four straight, and the playoffs look further away than ever. There’s still a chance, but it’s an outside one at best. Hopefully San Diego can turn things around as the new year begins.
