Ducks Acquire From Kylington The Islanders
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks acquired defenseman Oliver Kylington from the New York Islanders in exchange for future considerations. Kylington was just traded beforehand from the Colorado Avalanche to the Islanders as part of the Brock Nelson deal.
Analysis:
General Manager Pat Verbeek traded away Brian Dumoulin to the New Jersey Devils leaving the Ducks with six defensemen on the current roster. Outside of trading one of those players, Verbeek had two options 1) call up a player from San Diego or 2) trade for another defenseman. Verbeek choose the latter of the two options.
Kylington started his NHL career with the Calgary Flames in 2015. His best season came during the 2021-22 campaign when he recored 31 total points(9 G + 22A) in 73 games. Kylington then unfortunately had to miss the next season and part of the 2023-24 season due to personal reasons. He played in 33 games in the 2023-24 season posting 8 total points (3 G + 5 A).
Kylington is 6′ tall and 183 pounds and shoots left handed. He is a good skater, who has good puck control and can make good breakout passes from the defensive zone. His offensive upside is limited, though he did have a breakout year during the 2021-22 season.
This season he played in 13 games with Colorado and has one goal and three assists. He hasn’t seen much action with the Avalanche this season and he probably won’t see much playing time in Anaheim either. Drew Helleson, Pavel Mintyukov, and Olen Zellweger are expected to play most of the games to finish out the season. The Ducks do have a few back-to-backs scheduled in the remainder of this season and Kylington could be used in those situations to give someone a night off. He will be a UFA this summer. Verbeek brought him in as a depth move and insurance in the event of an injury.
The Ducks did trade away “future considerations” twin brother. We thank him for his time in Anaheim and wish him the best of luck with the New York Islanders.
