Ducks Take Down The Islanders
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks continued their homestand against the New York Islanders. Lukas Dostal was in net against Marcus Hogberg.
Recap:
Trevor Zegras tried The Michigan in the opening minutes of the first period, but was unsuccessful.
Sam Colangelo got the Ducks on the board first with about two minutes to go in the period. Cutter Gauthier found Colangelo in the slot and he skated around Hogberg and beat his outstretched glove for the score.
In the second period, Drew Helleson took a shot along the boards through traffic that beat Hogberg low. Anaheim led 2-0 after two periods.
Mason McTavish made it a 3-0 lead in the opening minute on the third period. The Ducks were on the power play and he took a wrist shot that beat Hogberg high.
Jansen Harkins was awarded a penalty shot just over three minutes into the period as he was hooked by Noah Dobson. Harkins was unsuccessful on the attempt.
With more than 12 minutes to go, the Islanders pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Colangelo scored into the empty net to make it 4-0
Tony DeAngelo scored with about 5 minutes to ruin the shutout bid by Dostal. The Ducks went on to win 4-1.
Analysis:
This was a nice bounce back win for Anaheim after the loss to St. Louis on Friday. The kid line of McTavish-Gauthier-Colangelo scored three of the four goals and combined for five points on the night. Colangelo has been on fire with a four game scoring streak. The line has been dominant since they started playing together a few games ago.
The Ducks special teams had a solid night. They scored on one of two power play attempts and kept the Islanders off the board during their three man advantages.
Anaheim was solid during five-on-five play for the first two periods and then were a little bit on their heels in the third period. They were up by three goals and the Islanders pulled their goalie multiple times. Islanders ended up with a 32-28 shot advantage.
Team News/Stats:
Colangelo has a four game goal streak with a total of 5 goals in that span. He is the first rookie to achieve that feat this season.
McTavish has points(3 G + 3 A) in his last four games.
Gauthier has eight points (3 G + 5 A) in his last eight games.
John Gibson has been practicing, but sat this contest out. Ville Husso served as the backup. He was reassigned to San Diego today.
For the first time in Ducks franchise history they had 7 or more players aged 23 or younger with a point. Buffalo was the only other NHL team this season to achieve the same feat.
