Recap
The Ducks had two power plays in the first period and the Canes had one man advantage. Neither team scored while on the power play. There was no score after the first period.
Carolina got on the board first about 8 minutes into the second period. Tyson Jost took a shot from the point and Mark Jankowski redirected it past Dostal.
About five minutes later Alex Killorn tied up the game on a 2-on-1 rush. He shot the puck low beating Andersen to get Anaheim on the board.
The Canes reclaimed the lead a few minutes later. Shayne Gostisbehere took a shot that missed the net completely, but banked off the boards right to Jordan Martinook at the side of the net for an easy tap in goal. Carolina led 2-1 after two periods.
Carolina went on the power play early in the third period and Taylor Hall scored to make it a 3-1 advantage.
Trevor Zegras pulled the Ducks within a goal with just under five minutes to go. He got to a loose puck in the crease and jammed it home for the score.
Hall then answered about 30 seconds later to make it a two goal lead again. The Ducks then pulled Dostal for the extra attacker and Hall scored completing the hat trick. The Ducks dropped this one by a 5-2 final.
Analysis:
The Ducks had a chance to jump out to an early lead with two power plays in the first period, including a double minor against Sean Walker for high sticking, but they couldn’t convert with the man advantage. Anaheim had six power plays on the night and did not cash in on any of them. Carolina went 1-for-3 with the power play.
Anaheim got off to a slow start with just six shots on goal in the first period. They picked things up in the second and then really poured it on in the third period putting up 20 shots in the final 20 minutes. Andersen was solid in net stopping 19 of those shots in the third period. He stopped two breakaway attempts by Troy Terry and Ryan Strome. He also made a big glove save on Olen Zellweger in close to the net.
It was a disappointing loss for Anaheim especially since Carolina played the night before in LA and go smoked 7-2 by the Kings. The Ducks needed to come out and jump on the Canes early, but they appeared to be the ones that played the night before with the sluggish start. The Ducks are now 13 points behind the St. Louis Blues for the final wild card spot.
