Ducks Get Canucked
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks finished their quick two game road trip in Vancouver against the Canucks. Lukas Dostal was in net against Thatcher Demko.
Recap
The Ducks got on the board early with a goal by Troy Terry just over a minute into this contest. He got the puck at the right face-off circle and beat Demko with a wrist shot.
The Canucks then responded with not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE goals. Vancouver scored five goals in under five minutes to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the period. Five different players scored for the Canucks which included Elias Pettersson, Filip Hronek, Brock Boeser, Conor Garland, and Dakota Joshua.
The Ducks got one back in the beginning of the second of the period. Trevor Zegras got the put at the left side of the net and slammed it home before Demko could cover the post. Anaheim was down 5-2 after two periods.
Max Sasson scored early in the third to make it a 6-2 contest. Vancouver went on to win by the same score.
Analysis
The Ducks got off to a good start scoring first, but then quickly fell apart giving up five goals in just under five minutes. Anaheim could never recover after that only getting one more goal from Zegras before losing 6-2. The Ducks were unlucky with three post shots in the first period and some lucky bounces went the Canucks way, but Anaheim still played poorly after their first goal in the opening period.
I know I sound like a broken record, but Anaheim lost the special teams battle again. The Ducks went 0-for-2 on the power play and the Canucks went 2-for-2.
Overall, the Ducks actually out played the Canucks outside of those five minutes in the first period. The Ducks posted a CF% of 58.59% and FF% of 59.04% during even strength play. Anaheim had an expected GF% of 64.41%. The Ducks posted 58 shot attempts to 41 for the Canucks at even strength. The five bad minutes in the first period proved too costly as the Canucks were able to sit on the four goal lead after the first period no matter how the Ducks played in the final 40 minutes.
Team Notes/Stats:
Terry scored his 20th goal and has scored 20+ goals in four consecutive seasons. He became the fifth player in Ducks history with at least four consecutive 20-goal campaigns. Anaheim now has four 20 goal scorers which include Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish, Frank Vatrano, and now Terry.
