Prospect Update: Yegor Sidorov
By Thomas Harrington
Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the third round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, forward Yegor Sidorov made his professional debut this past season and spent the entire year playing for the San Diego Gulls.
Sidorov played in 59 games in his rookie year and scored 17 goals and 34 points. He finished tied for fourth on the team in goals, eighth on the team in assists, and tied for seventh in points. Among San Diego rookies, he finished second in goals, third in assists, and third in points. In the entire AHL, he ranked tied for 20th in goals by a rookie. Sidorov was also tied for the team lead in shots with 153. He picked up his first career assist in his third game, and scored the first two goals of his career in the following game. His best stretch of the season came in December when he had a four-game point streak, and had back-to-back three-point games. Sidorov was used in a top nine role all season and saw time on the powerplay. He missed over 10 games with a couple of injuries and was a healthy scratch a handful of times throughout the season.
I had two expectations for Sidorov last summer, and he met them both. First, I wanted him to score somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 to 15 goals. Instead, he beat that with 17. Second, I wanted him to get consistent time in San Diego’s top six and see time on the powerplay. Over half of Sidorov’s games were spent in the Gulls’ top six and he finished fourth on the team in power play goals with four.
Sidorov should be back in the AHL for his sophomore campaign this coming season. With a year of professional hockey under his belt, more will be expected out of him. First, I want to see Sidorov hit the 20-goal mark. He’s shown he can put the puck in the net at the AHL level, now he needs to up his production. Second, for him to play in more than 60 AHL games. That means staying healthy but also playing more consistent hockey and not being a healthy scratch some nights. Finally, for him to do some more damage on the powerplay. The Gulls only scored 44 powerplay goals last season. If Sidorov can score a few more and help San Diego get to around 50 powerplay goals, they could have a top 10 powerplay in the league.
I think Sidorov is still about a year away from getting potentially significant time in the NHL, but there’s a chance he could be called up and make his NHL debut for a game or two this season. While he needs to work on his overall game, there’s no question that Sidorov will be one of the more offensively gifted wingers in San Diego this coming season. If he can be scoring at a 20 goal pace and improve his overall game, I could see the Ducks calling him up for a game or two, especially if Anaheim is going through injury trouble. It’s far from a guarantee, but there’s definitely a chance it could happen this year.
This was the first year of Sidorov’s entry-level contract and there are two years remaining on it. He’ll be a restricted free agent when it expires. As long as Sidorov continues to morph into an AHL scorer, he should be extended in two years time. If he has made his NHL debut or even played a full season with the Ducks, then he could be looking at a one-way deal. However, if he’s still improving his game in the AHL, then it’s more likely he gets a two-way deal.
The next prospect update will be on goaltender Vyacheslav Buteyets.
