Prospect Update: Ethan Procyszyn

By Thomas Harrington

Drafted by Anaheim in the third round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, forward Ethan Procyszyn finished his third season as a member of the North Bay Battalions of the OHL, and the first as their captain. He actually started the season as an assistant captain but was named captain of the team in January.

In the regular season, Procyszyn set career highs across the board, playing in 68 games and scoring 34 goals and 64 points. His previous career highs had been 15 goals and 36 points in 62 games. He led North Bay in goals and points while finishing third in assists. In the entire OHL, Procyszyn finished tied for 18th in goals and tied for 41st in points. While Procyszyn did have two four-game pointless streaks, he found his way onto the scoresheet more often than not, recording at least a point in more than 40 games. He had a career high four points against the Sudbury Wolves in November. The Battalions qualified for the playoffs, grabbing the final playoff spot. Procyszyn played in all five games and scored two goals for North Bay. They were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by the Brantford Bulldogs.

Procyszyn is a physical player with a high degree of skill. He hits with a purpose and uses his body to disrupt the other team and create offense for himself and his teammates. He gets a lot of his goals by going to the front of the net and causing havoc. Procyszyn is also a good defensive player, and if he does make it to the NHL someday, it will probably be as a bottom-six center. One thing he definitely needs to work on is his skating; that is probably the single biggest thing he needs to improve.

Procyszyn should be returning to the OHL for his fourth and likely final season. Procyszyn had a very successful season after being drafted; now he needs to be even better in his final season of junior hockey. I have a few expectations for him. First, I want Procyszyn to once again set career highs in goals, assists, and points. If he can get close to 40 goals and hit 70 points, that will be a fantastic finish to his OHL career. Second, for him to be among North Bay’s offensive leaders again. Finally, for him to be one of the top 30 scores in the OHL. If he had hit 72 points last season, he would have finished the season tied for 29th in league scoring.

Procyszyn is probably three to four years away from the NHL. He’s got another season of juniors ahead of him, and then he’ll spend time in the AHL. It all depends how he develops with the Gulls, but if things go well for him in San Diego, I could see him called up to Anaheim as early as the 2027-2028 season. Recent CHL draft picks from 2022 and 2023 like Nico Myatovic, Carey Terrance, Yegor Sidorov, Noah Warren, and Nathan Gaucher have all yet to make their NHL debuts. Instead, they are all being allowed to develop with San Diego before getting a chance in Anaheim, and I think Procyszyn will follow a similar path.

Procyszyn is currently unsigned, and the Ducks control his rights until June 1, 2026. As long as he has another strong season in the OHL, I’m confident the Ducks will sign him to a standard entry-level deal before then. The Ducks may even sign him before next season begins. However, if they choose not to and Procyszyn struggles next season, Anaheim could opt to not sign him and let him leave the organization.

The next prospect update will be on defenseman Darels Uljanskis.
