Prospect Update: Beckett Sennecke

By Thomas Harrington

Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, forward Beckett Sennecke played for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL this past season.

After being the surprise 3rd overall pick of the 2024 draft, Sennecke had a lot to prove this past season. He played in 56 games for Oshawa and scored 36 goals and 86 points. He led them in goals and points, and finished tied for 14th in both goals and assists in the OHL. Sennecke had a bit of a slow start to the season, but had turned things around by the end of October, and had a stretch of 10 games where he scored 22 points. In December, Sennecke was named the OHL Player of the Month. He missed a handful of games throughout the season due to a few different suspensions and missed time at the end of the season with an injury.

After a strong regular season, Sennecke was even better in the playoffs, scoring 14 goals and 32 points in just 18 games. The injury from the end of the regular season kept him out of a few playoff games, but he still finished tied for third in the OHL in goals scored and fourth in points. Oshawa lost to the London Knights in the OHL Championships in five games.

Despite playing so well early in the season, Sennecke was not originally invited to Team Canada’s selection camp. However, Sennecke played even better after that snub and Team Canada had no choice but to invite him to their selection camp. Despite receiving the invitation, and playing well at camp, Sennecke was still not chosen for the final roster. Team Canada finished without medaling, losing to Czechia in the quarterfinals. This was the second year in a row that Canada lost in the quarterfinals, and the first time they have ever lost in the quarterfinals in consecutive years. Sennecke’s inclusion wouldn’t have guaranteed Canada a medal, but it would have made them a more offensively dangerous team. Canada struggled to score throughout the tournament, finishing with 13 goals in five games.

Sennecke is an incredibly dangerous, offensively gifted winger. He’s also 6’4”, so if he can learn to properly use that size, the Ducks could potentially have a very dangerous power forward in the near future. He’ll never be a Selke candidate, but he has made more of an effort over the past year to become more defensively responsible.

This coming season, Sennecke can only play in the NHL or OHL; he is ineligible to play in the AHL, unless it’s on a conditioning stint. At this point, he’s likely too good for the OHL, but I’m not convinced he’s ready for a full NHL season. Depending on how training camp and the preseason go, Anaheim may consider doing with him what they did with Tristan Luneau: have him make the NHL coming out of the preseason, and give him several games early in the season. After that, scratch him for several games, and then assign him to San Diego on a conditioning assignment. Then bring Sennecke back to the Ducks, have him play a handful more games, and then send him to the World Juniors. Once the tournament is complete, have him finish the year in the OHL. This plan relies on Sennecke being not quite NHL ready. If he really looks great in the preseason and doesn’t slow down once the regular season starts, then he could stick with the Ducks all year.

As of right now, I’m going to assume that Sennecke spends most of the year in the OHL and set my expectations based on that. If he ends up playing the year in Anaheim, that would be fantastic, but I won’t make that an expectation for a player so recently drafted. First, when he’s in the OHL, I expect Sennecke to continue to be one of his team’s top offensive players. He had some great numbers last year, but I want him to be even better this season. Second, for him to make Team Canada’s roster at the World Juniors. Sennecke not making it last year was a surprise, but given how last year’s tournament ended, many think leaving Sennecke off of Team Canada was a mistake. As long as he’s dominating the OHL, he should be on their team this year. Finally, while I don’t expect him to stay the entire season in the NHL, I do think Sennecke is going to have a great training camp and should be among the final players cut from training camp.

Sennecke is currently signed to a three-year entry-level contract. If he plays in 10 or more NHL games this season, it will start this year and he’ll be a restricted free agent in three years. However, if he plays in nine or fewer NHL games, then his contract will slide and not start until the following year, which means he won’t be a restricted free agent until four years from now. Regardless of when his entry-level deal expires, expect Anaheim to sign him, likely to a one-way bridge deal.

With the prospect updates complete, next up I’ll be ranking the strength of Anaheim’s prospect positions.
