The Anaheim Ducks traveled to Detroit to face the Red Wings. Lukas Dostal was in net against John Gibson. Mikael Granlund was activated off the IR and returned to the lineup. Ryan Strome made his season debut.

There was no score in the opening period despite both teams having power play chances.

In the second period, Moritz Seider scored on the power play about six minutes into the period to take a 1-0 lead.

Anaheim answered with a goal by Cutter Gauthier about a minute later. Beckett Sennecke passed the puck to Gauthier at the side of the next for a tap in goal during a 2-on-1 rush.

Michael Rasmussen then scored about five minutes later to make it 2-1 Detroit lead. He beat Dostal glove side.

Chris Kreider then tied the game less than a minute later. Jackson LaCombe found Kreider in the right face-off circle and he Gibson over the shoulder.

Alex Sandin Pellikka then scored about a minute later to give Detroit the lead. The Red Wings led 3-2 after two periods.

Gibson exited the game at the end of the second period and Cam Talbot started the third period in net. Detroit scored in the opening minute of the third period to make it a 4-2 lead. Alex DeBrincat tipped a point shot on the power play to make it a two goal advantage.

Mikael Granlund scored about four minutes later to get Anaheim back within one goal. He deflected Ian Moore‘s post shot past Talbot.

The Ducks then gave up an odd man rush about 30 seconds later and Dylan Larkin scored to make it a 5-3 lead.

Anaheim pulled Dostal in the final minutes, but Detroit scored in the empty net to go on and win by a 6-3 final.

Analysis:

Overall the Ducks played decent at even strength putting up 50 shot attempts to 52 for the Red Wings. Anaheim posted a CF% of 49.02% and FF% of 50%. The problems came in the second where Detroit put 16 shots on goal to 7 for the Ducks and outscored them 3-2 in the middle frame.

Anaheim has an issue when getting behind this season. The Ducks battled back multiple times in this contest, but twice when they would get within a goal then the Red Wings would score less than a minute later. Defensive breakdowns have been a negative them for the team in the last two contests.

The penalty kill has also been an issue for the team. Detroit scored twice on the power play in four attempts in this contest. Anaheim’s penalty continues to be an issue and is in the bottom of the league. The power play, which has been much improved, went 0-for-3 in this contest. The Ducks also need to work on being more discipline and staying out of the box.

The Ducks will look to rebound with.a win against the Wild to finish this road trip. Anaheim will return home for two weeks after Saturday’s game.

Team Notes/Stats:

Gauthier played in his 100 NHL game and scored his team leading 12th goal.

Ryan Poehling (upper-body injury) did not play in this contest.

Ducks are 5-5-1 when the opponents score first. Anaheim is 6-0-0 when they score first.

For the first time this season Anaheim has lost two games in a row.

What’s Next?

The Ducks travel to Minnesota to battle the Wild Saturday at 3 PM.
