Ducks Get Blanked By The Mammoth
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks returned home to host the Utah Mammoth. Ville Husso was in net against Karel Vejmelka.
Utah scored twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Michael Carcone was behind the net and found Lawson Crouse in front for the backhand score.
Halfway through the period Dylan Guenther scored on a 2-on-0 rush to give the Mammoth a two goal lead.
The Mammoth made it a 3-0 lead early in the second period. Ian Cole scored from the left face-off circle with a wrist shot that beat Husso high.
Anaheim appeared to get on the board as Mason McTavish scored, but Utah challenged the play and it was deemed offside.
Utah then made it 4-0 with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle from JJ Peterka.
In the third period, Vyacheslav Buteyets made his NHL debut coming in to relieve Husso. The Mammoth scored three more times with goals from Liam O’Brien, JJ Peterka, and Clayton Keller to make it a 7-0 blowout win.
Analysis:
The Ducks started the game giving up odd man rushes and missing defensive coverages which got them in a 2-0 hole in the first period. Unfortunately the defensive miscues continued as they went down 4-0 after two periods and could never recover in this contest.
Anaheim didn’t help Ville Husso out and he was pulled after the second period. Husso didn’t do himself any favors giving up four goals on just 21 shots. Buteyets came in to start the third period and he didn’t fair much better giving up 3 goals on 13 shots against. The Ducks need to figure something out in net and defensively with Lukas Dostal and Petr Mrazek both out for at least two weeks.
The Ducks have gone with the 11-7 lineup in the last two contests. It worked against St. Louis, but didn’t in this contest. Ian Moore has been deployed as the 7th defensemen with Nikita Nesterenko and Ryan Strome being healthy scratches for both games. Moore played defense and some offense on the fourth line with Jansen Harkins and Ross Johnston, who both saw less than 10 minutes of ice time. It will be interesting to see if the 11-7 lineup will be used again and what role Moore will fill moving forward.
Team Notes/Stats:
The Ducks have gone down 2-0 six different times this season. Anaheim has gone 3-3-0 in those situations. Two of the wins came in overtime against San Jose and Vegas.
Anaheim is 9-1-0 when they score first. They are 7-10-1 when the opponents score first.
