Ducks Get Blanked By Canucks; Out Of The Panarin Sweepstakes
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks finished their road trip in Vancouver against the Canucks. Lukas Dostal was in net against Nikita Tolopilo.
There was no scoring in the first two periods of this contest.
Drew O’Connor broke the scoreless tie halfway through the third period. He one-timed a pass from the right face-off circle bending Dostal.
The Ducks pulled Dostal in the final minuets, but Teddy Blueger scored into the empty net to seal the deal. Vancouver won 2-0.
Analysis:
After back-to-back high scoring contests in Calgary and Edmonton, this contest turned out to be a goalie dual. Both goalies played extremely well and unfortunately the Ducks couldn’t get on the board.
The Ducks had a strong start to this one outshooting the Canucks 8-1 early on. The Anaheim had some good chances early on, but couldn’t score. Vancouver picked up their game a little bit and the shots ended up being tied at the end of the first period. Anaheim outshoot them in the second and third period, but couldn’t get the puck past Tolopilo. The Canucks got on the board and that’s all they needed was one goal to win.
Anaheim played a solid even strength game posting a CF% of 55% and FF of 55.26%. They also put up 55 shot attempts to 45 for the Canucks during even strength play.
Special teams weren’t a factor in this contest. Both teams had three power plays and neither scored with the man advantage. The Canucks second goal in the final moments was credited as a shorthanded goal, but it came when the Ducks had an empty net with Dostal pulled.
“It was a tough one,” Anaheim coach Joel Quenneville said afterward to the media. “The game was on the line almost the whole game. Whoever scored first had a pretty good opportunity to get two (points).”
Team Notes/Stats:
The Ducks finished the road trip 3-1-1.
Troy Terry flew out to Vancouver and practiced, but ended up not playing in this contest. Quenneville said Terry “came out of it a little sore” but could return Sunday at home against the Vegas.
Anaheim is out of the Artemi Panarin sweepstakes per multiple reports. He did have communication with all three California teams, but the extension didn’t make sense for the Ducks. The Ducks would have liked to acquired Panarin and seen if he was a good fit for the team before granting an extension. Anaheim has to also sign several RFAs this summer with Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier both likely getting big deals. So it makes sense why Pet Verbeek is leery of giving Panarin a big extension up front.
