San Diego Gulls Biweekly Report 9
By Thomas Harrington
The San Diego Gulls played three games over the past two weeks and had a record of 2-1-0-0. The Gulls have been playing well of late and currently occupy the sixth spot in the Pacific Division. More importantly, the eighth place team sits seven points behind them.
San Diego’s first game was a high-scoring affair. They hosted the Henderson Silver Knights. Justin Bailey opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest, and Ryan Carpenter doubled the lead 10 minutes later. Henderson made it 2-1 before the first was over. In the second, Yegor Sidorov scored early, but the Silver Knights struck back less than a minute later. Sasha Pastujov restored the two-goal lead, but Henderson scored two quick goals less than 50 seconds apart to tie the game at 4-4. In the third period, Mathew Phillips put San Diego back on top, and Roland McKeown made it 6-4. Noah Warren finished things off with an empty net goal and the Gulls won 7-4.
The Gulls then traveled to Bakersfield to face the Condors. Phillips made it 1-0 early in the first and Tim Washe made it 2-0 in the second. The Condors got on the board late in the third, but Nathan Gaucher finished the game with an empty net goal and San Diego won 3-1.
The Gulls then returned home to host Bakersfield. The Condors scored less than two minutes into the game, but Bailey tied the game. Bakersfield then retook the lead before Stian Solberg tied the game back up. In the second, Bakersfield scored but Judd Caulfield tied the game. Late in the second, the Condors regained the lead again. They then scored early in the third to give Bakersfield their first two-goal lead of the contest. Caulfield scored his second of the night a couple minutes later, but the Gulls were not able to score again and lost 5-4.
San Diego will play six games over the next two weeks. They’ll start out at home hosting the San Jose Barracuda and then hit the road for a pair of games in Rockford against the IceHogs. The Gulls will then return home to host the Tucson Roadrunners before going back on the road for a pair of games in Texas against the Stars.
With the NHL in the midst of its Olympic break, there won’t be any players recalled to the NHL quickly. However, once the NHL does resume play, Washe will likely be the first player heading up to Anaheim.
This two week stretch saw San Diego only play a few games because of the AHL All-Star Game. With the festivities behind them, the Gulls need to play even better down the stretch to secure a spot in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
