Ducks Lose To The Devils 4-1

The Anaheim Ducks continued their road trip in New Jersey against the Devils. Ville Husso was in net against Nico Daws. Pavel Mintyukov (lower-body) injury returned home. Jeff Malott was out as he was dealing with an illness. Nikita Klepov and Nick Jensen both drew back into the lineup.

Recap

The Devils struck first just under five minutes into this one. Jesper Bratt found Arseny Gritsyuk in front for tap in goal.

Roger McQueen appeared to tie up the game late in the first period, but Alex Killorn was called for tripping moments before the puck went in.

Nico Hischier scored on the ensuing power play to make it a 2-0 Devils lead at the end of the first period.

There was no scoring in the second period. In the third period, Tim Washe got the Ducks on the board just before the halfway point of the period. He deflected a point shot from Jackson LaCombe past Daws.

Anthony Mantha then scored a few minutes later to restore their two goal lead. Husso tried to cover the puck on a shot by Brett Pesce, but Mantha got to it and pushed it past Husso.

The Ducks pulled their goalie and Jack Hughes scored into the empty net. The Devils went on to win 4-1.

Analysis:

The Ducks got off to a very slow start again only registering two shots on goal in the first period. It looked like Anaheim might get out of the period with a 1-1 tie, but Roger McQueen‘s first NHL goal was called back due to a penalty moments before. Instead New Jersey scored on the power play and had a two goal advantage after the first period. The Ducks were able to pull within one in the third period, but couldn’t get any closer.

At even strength the Ducks put up 49 shots attempts to 48 for the Devils. The problem is the Ducks shots were blocked or sent wide of the net. New Jersey ended up with 29 shots on goal to just 17 for Anaheim.

Special teams weren’t too much of a factor, but the Ducks couldn’t convert on their one power play. The Devils went 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

Nothing seems to be going right for Anaheim now. The Ducks have lost five in a row and can’t seem to score goals to save their life. Anaheim has been outscored 20 to 9 in their last five games.

Leo Carlsson had a hot start to the season, but has only one goal and two assists during this losing streak. Cutter Gauthier had a solid start to the season as well, but only has one assist in the last five games. Those two need to get things going again if the Ducks want to end this losing streak.

The Ducks play the Flyers on Saturday at 10 AM.
