Ducks Rally Past Flyers
The Anaheim Ducks finished their road trip in Philadelphia against the Flyers. Lukas Dostal was in net against Joseph Woll. There were several lineup changes for Anaheim. Nikita Klepov, Nick Jensen, and Frank Vatrano were all healthy scratches. Judd Caulfield, Jeff Malott, and Travis Mitchell all drew in.
Recap
A.J. Greer dropped the gloves with Hunter McDonald with just over six minutes left to go in the first period. Greer received two minutes of instigating, five minutes for fighting and 10 minutes for a misconduct penalty. Sam Colangelo was also called for roughing. The Flyers had a 5-on-3 power play for two minutes and ended up scoring twice, once with the two man advantage and then again with a 5-on-4 power play. Philadelphia led 2-0 after the first period.
The Ducks got on the board just before the halfway point of the second period. Cutter Gauthier found Leo Carlsson in the slot for the score on a one-timer.
Greer scored just less than five minutes later to tie the game up at two. He took a shot that hit the post and then barely crossed the goal line. The play was reviewed and the goal was confirmed.
Tyson Foerster then put the Flyers ahead by one about two minutes later. He scored shorthanded at the side of the net as he threw the puck low and it somehow squeezed by Dostal.
Judd Caulfield then answered for Anaheim to tie the game at three before the period was over. He redirected a pass from Alex Killorn past Woll in front.
Tristan Luneau scored at the two minute mark in the third period to make it a 4-3 game. He shot the puck from the goal line to the right of the net and the puck beat Woll low.
Beckett Sennecke scored on the power play about five minutes later to make it a 5-3 lead. He redirected a pass from Carlsson for the score.
Matvei Michkov scored about a minute later to get the Flyers within one goal. He got to a loose puck in the crease and pushed it past Dostal.
The Flyers pulled their goalie in the final minutes of this contest, but they couldn’t get the tying score. Ducks won 5-4.
Analysis:
The Ducks had a decent start in the opening moments of this game. Sam Colangelo was called for roughing against McDonald with just under six minutes to go in the period. Greer took exception to the exchange and dropped the gloves with McDonald. When it was all said and done the Ducks found themselves on the wrong side of the penalties. The Flyers had a 5-on-3 for two minutes and cashed in twice.
Despite the Ducks being down 2-0 to start the second period they responded with two goals to tie the game. The Flyers then went ahead 3-2, but the Ducks answered to tie the game once gain. Anaheim then scored twice in the third to take a 5-3 lead. Philadelphia scored once more, but they could not tie up the game and Anaheim won.
The fact the Ducks were able to come back and win this game was amazing. Greer being called for an instigator penalty was a complete joke. He dropped the gloves at the same time as McDonald did. Greer also had to sit for 10 minutes due to a misconduct penalty which accompanies the instigator penalty. Even after spotting the Flyers a 2-0 lead, the Ducks scored the next five of six goals in the game and went on to win.
The Ducks were 0-3-0 on this road trip and had lost five in a row coming into this game. This was a must win for Anaheim and they were able to get it done against the Flyers and refs.
The Flyers has seven, yes seven, power plays in this contest and scored twice. Outside the 5-on-3 man advantage for the Flyers, the Ducks were able to keep them off the board. Anaheim went 1-for-4 on the power play.
The Ducks had five different players score in this one. Tristan Luneau had his career best three points with a goal and two assists. Carlsson scored a goal and had an assist. It was his first goal in four games. Gauthier had an assist and nearly scored at the end of the second period. This two need to continue to produce night in and night out.
Dostal did give up a shaky shorthanded goal when the Ducks were on the power play, but Woll returned the favor later in the game. It was a rough road trip to say the least, but the Ducks will take the two points in the final game and return home for three games.
Team Notes:
The Ducks are 5-1-0 with Mitchell in the lineup this season. They are 0-5-0 when he doesn’t play. Maybe he is the Ducks good luck charm?
