San Diego Gulls Biweekly Report 2

The San Diego Gulls played five games over the past two weeks and had a record of 2-3-0, dropping their overall record to .500 on the season. It’s early, but only a handful of points separate the 10 teams in the Pacific Division. For the Gulls to get back to the playoffs, they are going to need to pick up some more wins going forward.

Reign Edge Gulls 3-2

The Gulls started out by hosting their rivals the Ontario Reign. Matt Basgall opened the scoring in the first period with his first goal of the season. Lucas Pettersson assisted on the goal, his first career point in the AHL. The second period belonged to Ontario, as they scored three unanswered goals. In the third, the Gulls were pushing for goals, but the only one they were able to find was a powerplay goal by Yegor Sidorov with less than 25 seconds to go in the game. The Reign won 3-2.

Gulls Earn Split In Tucson

The Gulls then traveled to Tucson for a pair of games. The Roadrunners scored one goal in each period and all 31 shots that San Diego took were stopped, giving Tucson the 3-0 win. In the next game against the Roadrunners, Nico Myatovic continued his strong start to the season with a goal just a minute into the contest, but Tucson tied the game before the period was over. In the second, Matthew Phillips recorded the only goal, but the Roadrunners tied the game up in the third. No one else scored in regulation, and the game went to overtime. Myatovic scored the gamewinner less than a minute into the extra session, giving the Gulls a 3-2 win.

Gulls Come Up Short Against Firebirds

San Diego then returned home for a pair of games. In the first game, Coachella Valley came to town, and Ryan Carpenter opened the scoring in the opening period. Phillips made it 2-0 four minutes later. The Firebirds got on the board late in the first. Neither team scored in the second, but the Coachella Valley tied the game with less than two minutes to go in regulation. Then with just over 20 seconds left in the game, the Firebirds scored again and won 3-2.

San Diego Takes Down San Jose

For the Gulls’ final game, they hosted the San Jose Barracuda. Corey Schueneman opened the scoring in the first for his first goal as a member of the Gulls. Neither team scored in the second, and James Hamblin scored twice in the third to make it a 3-0 game. San Jose scored late, but Myatovic finished the game off with an empty net goal, and the Gulls won 4-1.

The Gulls will play four games over the next two weeks. They’ll stay at home for the first two games, hosting the Henderson Silver Knights and then the Colorado Eagles. San Diego will then hit the road for a pair of games in Henderson.

With Travis Mitchell and Roger McQueen both already in Anaheim, hopefully the Ducks won’t need many more reinforcements from the Gulls. But if they do, there are a few players who have continued to play well early in the season. First, even though he didn’t score in the past five games, Anton Wahlberg did pick up five assists. He leads the Gulls in assists with nine and points with 10. Myatovic is the team’s early goals leader, and if the Ducks need help at forward, either one of them would be a solid option. On the backend, Stian Solberg continues to be among San Diego’s top blueliners. It’s starting to feel like a question of when, and not if, he’ll make his NHL debut this season.

Nine games into the season and the Gulls are playing okay. They’ve had some great games and some less than stellar results. There’s a lot of season left, but San Diego is going to need to put forward a more consistent effort if they want to get back to the Calder Cup Playoffs and do more than lose in the opening round. Hopefully the Ducks can get healthy soon, which will in turn help reinforce San Diego.
