After the Horn (October 29th vs Buffalo):

The Anaheim Ducks dropped another contest Thursday evening at home versus the Buffalo Sabres, continuing a streak of unsteady productivity in each aspect of the game.

Thursday’s outing was highlighted by a Tage Thompson hat trick and two assists. His five points would lead the way as three separate teammates also logged goals vs Ville Husso. With scoring six goals, the front office seems uncertain of who can be tasked with the responsibility in goal. Following the seven-goal loss, the Ducks have called up Laurent Brossoit, who will start vs Ottawa. Neither Lukas Dostal or Ville Husso are mentioned to be hurt, allowing Bossoit a chance to prove himself and compete for the starting spot. Head Coach Joel Quenneville on Brossoit starting: “It’s an opportunity.” The 13-year veteran has NHL experience for four separate NHL franchises, not including Anaheim.

Cutter Gauthier added his third and fourth goals of the season, as Beckett Sennecke scored his eighth in 13 games, enough for 16th most in the NHL. Mikael Granlund opened the scoring in the 1st period, with Roger McQueen logging his first career NHL goal and Tristan Luneau contributing to the near comeback in 3rd period making the score 7-5.

Despite a close game on paper, the Ducks once trailed 7-3 in the third period, where they were able to slightly outscore Buffalo late in the game, coming short with a 7-6 loss. Anaheim now sits in 6th place in the Pacific and only one point above Los Angeles. Four points separate the Ducks with the last place Canucks and the Ottawa Senators are next in line, currently possessing a 9-5-1 record.

Before the Drop (November 1 vs Ottawa):

The Ottawa Senators currently possess the third-most wins across the NHL and continue to prove themselves following a season in which they lost Brady Tkachuk. After becoming victorious in six of their first eight games of the season, Ottawa has slightly cooled off and dropped three of their last five. While this would be enticing in the majority of circumstances, Anaheim has dropped seven of their last eight and continue to try and determine the successful formula in the early stages of the season.

Ottawa will serve as another difficult force to defend with Tim Stutzle recorded 21 points this season, including nine goals. Teammate Drake Batherson also has nine goals on the season.

The Senators appear to have the slight advantage comparing stats on paper, however Anaheim will certainly have an opportunity to get back on track after two-days rest and home ice advantage. The Ducks have allowed nearly four goals per game which is concerning considering the offensive threats Ottawa will present. Ottawa’s backstop, Linus Ullmark, will not be in goal, potentially presenting the Ducks with an opportunity to ambush a less experienced goalie. Ullmark is 7-1-0 in goal this season, with the remainder of the goaltenders responsible for the four other losses on record.

Ottawa will visit the Honda Center today at 5 pm PST.
