Colorado: Final March

Photo: USA Today

By Richard Gonzalez

Happy March everyone. I probably wouldn’t have said that on March 5th, when we dropped three consecutive games for the month. However, the last two games have been absolutely amazing. A 3-1 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes and a 3-2 win against the New Jersey Devils.

Let’s break down the first week of March.

March 2nd, 2017

We started off the new month with a game against the Ottawa Senators. The Avs played in Ottawa and were 1-12-1 in their last 14 games on the road. Calvin Pickard made 37 saves out of the 39 shots he faced. Newly acquired Sens forward Alexandre Burrows would net the only 2 goals to beat the Avs. It would be safe to say the team wasn’t nervous due to possibly being traded since the deadline passed. Our big guns were firing blanks.

March 4th, 2017

The Avs, now 1-13-1 on the road, would be the guest of the hosting Winnipeg Jets. The Jets dominated this game easily by beating the Avs 6-1. Our captain Gabriel Landeskog would help our pride by preventing the shutout when he scored a goal against Connor Hellebuyck with 16 seconds left in the third period.

March 5th, 2017

So the St. Louis Blues came to the Pepsi Center a.k.a. The Can. The Blues were feeling Blue coming to Denver with a 5 game winless streak. Patrick Berglund and former Avalanche Paul Stastny both scored in the second period to take the lead 2-0. They scored only 1:36 apart against our slumping Avs. Kyle Brodziak would score the last goal making it a 3-0 Blues. The Avs were the ones feeling blue that night.

March 7th, 2017

The Carolina Hurricanes came into The Can. The Avs were coming in with a 4 game losing streak and only winning 2 games of their last 10. The Canes wanted revenge for their last meeting when the Avs would win with 37 seconds left in overtime to earn the win. Tyson Barrie would have no part of that by scoring 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) in the Avs 3-1 victory over the Canes ending the losing streak. This win ended our losing streak. We also ended a 5 game losing streak when we beat the Canes in Carolina on February 17th, 2017.

March 9th, 2017

The Avs would host a slumping New Jersey Devils team. The Devils were looking to end their 9 game losing streak, which included back to back shutouts against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Alternate captains Nathan MacKinnon, Francois Beauchemin, and forward Rene Bourque would not let that happen. They each had a goal to help the Avs beat the Canes 3-2 and extended their winning streak to 2 games. Yes, we’re are happy about that.

What could it have been?

So what was the cause of their recent success? Did the Avs find a four leaf clover? Maybe the Avs playing the #AvsTwitteraPsychic game from Jay Vean (@Avspodcast) could have been a factor, which the Avs team is 2-0 when playing this season. A big shout out by the way to the Colorado Avalanche’s social media team. Regardless of how bad this season is they have always been positive and interact with fans/fan made accounts. Hence, playing the popular AvsTwitterPsychic game where fans predict who will score the first goal. Guess right and get a Retweet from the Avspodcast twitter page, which I won the first time this season.

Simple:

I feel the Avalanche just applied the simple acronym K.I.S.S. Which means ” keep it simple stupid.” The Avalanche played a simple game and went with the fundamentals of hockey to earn their victories.

Final thoughts:

Some might say, oh, it’s only the Canes and Devils but both teams have the fire power to do some damage. Especially against our slumping team. Yes, a Cup run is over. Been for a while. However, the season isn’t and our team played with a lot of pride for themselves, their fans, and more importantly the team. I constantly see “fans” bashing the team and screaming rebuild. We have the opportunity, skills, and pride to more forward from the season. We do need help on defense but have the fire power and potential for next season. Rebuild is not required in my opinion.

Regardless, I am proud to be an Avs fan. I’m proud of my team’s performance in their last two games. They played simple fundamental hockey. I’m so optimistic about next season and to see how well our team will bounce back from adversity. Remember the season after the dark Joe Sacco season? I sure do. I believe in our core, our coach, and more importantly our team.

Let’s finish this season strong.
