Tampa Bay Lightning Vs. Anaheim Ducks Game Preview

Kevin Flannery

By Luke Finlay

The Tampa Bay Lightning are coming off a huge and substantial victory over the Los Angeles Kings, with the final score being 5-2. It was such a huge win for the Lightning in fact, that in total 10 players on the Lighting recorded a point, while Victor Hedman, Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos, and Alex Killorn are coming off multi-point games. Furthermore, Nikita Kucherov recorded the most points of all Lightning players in that game with a total of 3 points, with 1 goal and 2 assists. Also, how can we forget that the Lightning scored a total of 4 goals in 2 minutes and 2 seconds in the 1st period, setting a franchise record for shortest amount of time to score 4 goals in a single game. On the other side of the ice, the Anaheim Ducks are coming off a 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks. In that victory 8 players recorded a point, while Rickard Rakell, Corey Perry, and Jakob Silfverberg are coming off multi-point games. In the Lightning’s victory, Peter Budaj was in net eventually stopping 22 of 24 saves while giving up 2 goals to get his first win on the season. In the Ducks victory, Ryan Miller was in net and eventually stopped 13 of only 14 shots, while only allowing 1 goal.  The Lightning and the Ducks face-off at 8:00 eastern time!

TAMPA’S OUTLOOK:

The Tampa Bay Lightning are coming off two big wins against the top two defenses in the league, (at the time) in the San Jose Sharks, and the Los Angeles Kings. In those two games the Lighting have combined for 10 goals, scoring 5 in both wins. Yet, this game can have a different feeling, because on October 28th the Anaheim Ducks came to Tampa and came out with a 4-1 win. Chances are the Ducks come out with the same strategy with playing tight defense in the neutral zone, and on their on blue line. The Lightning had a tough time coming into the offensive zone and maintaining possession in that game, and both the Lightning and the Ducks know that. It’s most likely that the Ducks keep the same strategy while the Lightning have to change some things up.

KEYS FOR SUCCESS:

1.REVENGE

The Lightning, like any team, aren’t very fond of losing on home ice. Most likely they will use that emotion to come out fast and physical.

2.RIDE ANDRE VASILEVSKIY

Andre Vasilevskiy has been turning heads around the league with his outstanding goal tending, while having a 12-1-1 record with 2.41 GAA, and a .928 SV%. They need to use that to their advantage and play really confident.

3.SUCCESS IN CALIFORNIA

The Lightning have beaten two hot teams in the San Jose Sharks, and the Los Angeles Kings. The Sharks had a 4-game win streak the Lightning snapped, and they beat the Pacific division leaders in the Los Angeles Kings. Use that momentum and confidence to sweep the California road trip.

ANAHEIM’S OUTLOOK:

The Anaheim Ducks are coming off a 4-1 victory against the Canucks, which can add even more momentum to the fact that they have already beaten the best team in the league, the Tampa Bay Lightning. They will likely start John Gibson, the same goalie that played the last time we lost to them back in Tampa earlier this season. Gibson however has not played since the 7th after going out in the third period with an upper-body injury. However, just because they’ve beaten the Lightning before doesn’t mean they have to play relaxed. The Lightning arguably have the greatest momentum in the league right now coming off those two huge victories against San Jose, and Los Angeles.

KEYS FOR SUCCESS:

1.DON’T PLAY COMFORTABLE

Just because they’ve beaten the Lightning earlier in the season is not an excuse to play relaxed or comfortable. They have to remember they are playing the best team in the league.

2. PLAY FAST AND CONFIDENT

You can’t beat a fast team, by being slow. Therefore they have to play fast and try to control the tempo all game.

3. MAKE THEM ANGRY

The Ducks like a lot of Western teams play with an edge and have a lot of physicality. They have to use that strength to their advantage, plus they have a player named Corey Perry who is arguably the best the best agitator in the league.
