Post Game Report: Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New York Islanders
By: Luke Finlay
First Period
The Islanders came off aggressive and fast, and it didn’t really look like the Lightning were ready for it. Within the first minute of the game, Ladd goes to the front of the net and gets a nice snipe past Andrei Vasilievsky. Slowly the spirit of the Lightning fades away during the period with Anders Lee getting a goal for the Islanders. For the rest of the period, the Islanders were in total control and maintained and nice, and fast heavy pace to carry them into the second period.
Score: 2-0 Islanders
Shots: 12-10 Lightning
Second Period
The Islanders maintained their pace very nicely going into the second also. Eventually, another Islanders goal came along with that with credit going to Brock Nelson. Nothing really special goes on in this period with slight momentum going back and forth between the teams, however the Lightning wouldn’t get a goal. The Islanders showed that they could keep the same pace for two straight periods, but will it carry over to the 3rd?
Score: 3-0 Islanders
Shots: 25-24 Lightning
Third Period
This was by far the best period for the Lightning, but it didn’t start off that way. Early in the 3rd, with Anders Lee getting another goal for the Islanders. This is where the fun begins, eventually a shot goes and rebounds of off Greiss’s pads and goes to Yanni Gourde to get the rebound and put the Lightning on the board, 4-1. Approximately about 15 or 20 seconds later, Ondrej Palat cashes in big time with a huge goal to cut the lead to 2 goals, 4-2. It took some time to give the Lightning their third goal, with Gourde coming up big again with what it looked like, an identical goal as his 1st in the game. The score was 4-3 with about 5 minutes left. For the next 4 minutes the Lightning battle hard with Andrei Vasilievsky on the bench to give the Lightning the extra attacker. However, with about 45 seconds left Steven Stamkos turns the puck over, eventually giving a 2 on 1 for the Islanders with John Tavares getting the empty net goal. 5-3.
