LICK IT MARCHAND!

Kevin Flannery

By Jake Ricker

Overview

The Tampa Bay Lightning played a crazy game tonight. They looked fantastic in the first, shaky in the second, and decent for the rest of the game. As for the Bruins, they made a huge comeback in the second after critical turnovers in the first, however, they could just not stop the firepower form the Bolts. Things once again got physical with tons and tons of hits. Also supries suprise, officiating could not stay consitant for both sides. Overall the Bolts played great with a bumb in the seconed, and one mistake in the third. The Bolts have now taken a 3-1 series lead after tonight’s HUGE victory in game 4. Let’s take a look at how we got here period by period.

First Period

The Bolts got off to a fantastic start in this one, dominating early. It wasn’t long with a thunderstorm lurking that the Bolts struck first. Just over 4 min in Brayden Point made an unbelievable move to get right past Chara and snuck it right past Rask! With this highlight reel goal, the Lighting would lead the Bruins 1-0 early in the first. The Bolts didn’t stop pushing though as they continued to get chance after chance. The Bruins would then take the first penalty of the game as Nash was called for tripping. The Bolts quickly got to work and got some quality chances but could not get anything past Rask. With 15 seconds let on the penalty, the Bruins made a grave mistake. Chara would head to the box for delay of game to give the Bolts a 5 on 3 PP. The Bruins were able to kill off the first part of the 5 on 3 but could not stop everything. Hedman made a great pass to Kuch, who sent an absolute rocket that ended right in the back of the net to give the Bolts a 2-0 lead. The Bolts were playing better than ever and that continued through the next few mins. The Bruins started to slowly push back but nothing Vasy couldn’t handle. Stamkos then took a very bad penalty, as he elbowed Rick Nash in the head. Now there was no injury on the Play and Nash did have his head way down but still not the greatest play by Stamkos. The Bruins would make them pay after the puck deflected in the air and no one could find the puck but David Pastranak who slapped it home to pull the Bruins within one. Both teams would get a few more chances but time would esxspire and things were looking up for the Bolts.

Second Period

The second period did not get off to as great of a start as the first did for the Bolts. Just 43 seconds into the period Johnson would get called for tripping and give the Bruins their second PP of the night. The Bruins had the PP touch tonight as they once again took advantage. Bergeron took a shot from the slot and put it past Vasy to tie the game at 2. The Bolts looked sloppy as they gave the Bruins tons of chances after the PPG but Vasy turned them away. The Bolts would get a huge chance on the PP as Nash was called for tripping. The Bolts got a few nice looks but could not capitalize as the Bruins successfully killed it off. Things then started to get very physical with players dishing out hit after hit after hit. The game remained like this for next half of the period and the Bruins fans loved it. Stamkos eventually broke out on a breakaway but was denied by Rask to keep things tied at 2. One hit would get more attention than the others as the “Rat” Marchand made a low hit on Cally. Cally was ok after the play but was not happy about the hit, and rightly so. Cally and a few other players got into some small scrums but the Refs would eventually settle things down. Both teams kept up the physical pace and each got some more scoring chances before the period would expire. Despite a shaky second, the Bolts came out of it tied with the Bruins and things would have to be decided in the final 20.

Goals: 2-2

Third Period

The Bolts got off to a much better start in this one as they grabbed a few quick changes. Vasy also looked good early making some key stops. The Bolts kept pushing though with a few more quality chances. Then the Bolts would be rewarded as the refs made a questionable call on Acciari for hooking. Things started to turn though as the Bolts got sloppy, they did not get many good chances. The Bruins then broke it out and the Lighting let Marchand go right by them! He was then fed the puck and the Bruins lead 3-2. Things just got worse for the Bolts as Johnson tapped Chara who then gave his best Crosby impression by flopping to the ice. Johnson would get called for “slashing” and we would play 4 on 4. Neither team got any big chances on the 4 on 4 which ended rather quickly. The Bruins then had a shortened PP to work with. The PP had been great all night but the Bolts finally shut it down and kept the deficit at 1. The Bolts just kept on pushing though, as they were not about to go down easier. The top line that had been quiet all series then made the play of the night. Kuch stole the puck behind the net and then threw it to Stamkos who sent an absolute rocket right past Rask to TIE THS GAME!!! Time started to wind down and with the game tied it was as intense as ever. Both teams got some huge chances but Rask and Vasy kept the doors shut. Then in the final seconds,  Kuch busted into the zone after getting a breakout pass and nearly got a breakaway, but he could not get a shot off. Time would then soon expire and this one would have to be decided in OT.

Goals: 3-3

Shots: 30-26 Boston

Overtime

Things got off to a slow start for the Bolts as Boston had the majority of chances early on. Vasy stoped them all though and Paquette even made a great block that might have saved a goal. Things then started to turn as the Bolts got most of the chances in the offencive zone. With heart rates at an all time, the game was bout to end. A small scrum emerged to the right of rask and both teams despertly dug for it. Alex Killorn came up with the Puck and threw it on net where Dan Girardi would tip the puck in and WIN THE GAME IN OVERTIME!!!!!

3 Stars

  1. Stamkos (1G, 1A)
  2. Girardi (GWG)
  3. Bergeron (2G)

Up Next and Final Strike

Wow what a game! The Bolts dominated the first period with great play. However they looked terible in the seconed making bad passes and desisions. As for th third they played well and made one bad mistake that nearly cost them the game. But they got the Job done when it matterd most. The top line finally got going and they looked great, and the others continued to play great in the offenive zone. As for Vasy he had a quiet game, but still a good one, making the saves when we needed him too. With thagt said The Bolts will need to make sure they play a full 60 min in game 5 as the Bruins will show no mercy. Finsih this thing and don’t have to get back on that plane!

The Bolts will look to close this sirese out, And send the Bruins home to set up tee times! Game 5 will take place at Amalie Arena, Sunday, May 6th at 3:00 PM
