Bolts Fall to Canucks 4-1 After a Disappointing 3rd

Justin Haas

By: Jake Ricker

Overview

Well, things were looking awfully good for the Bolts through the first 40, but boy was that a disappointing third. Bolts killed it early on jumping on pucks and keeping their foot on the gas until they fell apart in the third. The Canucks just kept pushing until the Bolts let their guard down. Neilson kept them in this game as he was outstanding. This was not a fun one to watch in the third as they absolutely blew it. Lets take a look at how we got there period by period.

First Period

The Bolts got off to a great start quickly using their speed to their advantage. The Bolts would then get an early opportunity as Brock Boeser would get called for slashing and give the Bolts the first PP of the night. The Bolts would get a few decent chances but would fail to convert on the first PP of the night. The Bolts would go right back to the PP though as Nikolay Goldobin would get 2 for tripping. The Bolts fired off shots in quick succession but the Canucks were able to hold them off and keep this game scoreless. The Bolts kept up the momentum as they continued to get shot after shot off. As the game went on the Bolts outshot the Canucks 11-4 with just under 7 min to go. The Bolts Cirelli and Joseph played especially well as they were quick to pucks and made smart plays in the offensive zone. The Canucks netminder Anders Nilsson was playing great as he continued to stop everything the Bolts threw at him. The Bolts persistence paid off though as Brayden Point found a juicy rebound that he tapped home to give the Bolts the first lead of the game. The Bolts would head into the locker room with a 1 goal lead after a dominating first.

Second Period

Things did not get off to a better start for the Canucks as Erik Gudbranson was called for hooking. The Bolts grabbed a few chances but the Canucks killed it off and kept the Bolts at a 1 goal lead. The Bolts picked up right where they left off as they peppered the Canucks with shots. Hedman then broke out all alone and nearly put the Bolts up by 2. Hedman did draw a penalty though as Stecher was called for a hook. The Bolts would once again pick up a few shots but could not capitalize on the PP. The Bolts continued the aggression but would then give the Canucks their first PP chance of the night as Killorn was called for High-Sticking. The Bolts would kill it off though and protect their 1-0 lead. The Canucks then sent the Bolts right back to the PP as Brock Boeser was called for holding. Despite all the success, the Bolts power play was not good as they failed to convert for the 5th time tonight. Ryan McDonagh would then get 2 for interference and give the Canucks their second PP opportunity. The Bolts killed most of the penalty off with success but then Cirelli would be called for holding giving the Canucks a short 5 on 3. The Bolts never looked back though as they once again killed off both of the remaining penalties. As time began to wind done the Bolts kept pounding away but would not be able to squeeze one in before the horn sounded.

Third Period

The Bolts once again dominated early quickly jumping on chances in the offensive zone. The Canucks began to push back a little but the Bolts defense quickly outsmarted them and broke up their chances. The pace definitely started to slow down in the final 20 min despite all the offensive zone time. The Bolts would then get called for a faceoff violation and give the Canucks their 4th PP of the night. The Bolts PK never slowed down as they killed off the 4th penalty of the night. Vasy was also still stopping shots like there was no tomorrow and made a few great stops. The Canucks got a few more chances though and one finally paid off as Elias Pettersson snaped one past Vasy to tie this game at 1. The Canucks didn’t stop there though as Brock Boeser slapped one from the point to put the Canucks up by 1. The Bolts then started to get sloppy with silly turnovers and were quickly running out of time. With under 2 min to go the Bolts would then pull Vasy to get the extra attacker on. Kuch then got read like a book and Jake Virtanen tapped it home for the empty netter. Markus Granlund then got one last empty netter and the Canucks would win it 4-1.

Up Next and Final Strike

Things got off to an excellent start as the Bolts looked great. They were quick to pucks and shot first passed second. The penalty kill was fantastic once again going a perfect 4 for 4 but the power play, on the other hand, was terrible as they till have yet to convert on a single opportunity. Things got really bad in the final 20 as the Bolts completely fell apart after dominating this game. They got sloppy and made silly mistakes that gave the Canucks golden opportunities to score. These issues will need to be corrected ASAP as this was just plain unacceptable with a Lightning team of this caliber.

The Bolts will look to bounce back as they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday, October 13th at 7:00 PM in Amalie Arena.
