Bolts Cruise Past Oilers And Extend Their Win Streak to Three

Kevin Flannery

By: Jake Ricker

Overview

The Bolts dominated this one as they jumped on the puck and responded every time the Oilers pushed back. The Oilers just could not crack the Bolts defense and Vasy. They were constantly playing from behind. Things quickly got heated in this one as tempers flared but the Bolts stayed on top of their game as they beat the Oilers 5-2. Let’s take a look at how we got here period by period.

First Period

The Bolts got off to a quick start firing quick shots on net looking to jump out to an early lead. The Bolts continued to take some quality shots but most importantly controlled the pace of this game as they played with speed in the early minutes of the period. The Bolts were then rewarded as Stamkos got in close and rifled one up high to put the Lightning up by 1! Edmonton then tried to quickly respond as they had a wide open net but Vasilevskiy somehow headbutted it away to keep the Oilers off the board. The Bolts would then get a chance to go up by 2 as Rattie was called for slashing. The Bolts would get a few close chances on the rebound, but the Oilers would successfully kill off the penalty. Edmonton then began to push back, but Vasy had other ideas as he turned away everything they threw at him with a little help from the post. Things then became much more evenly matched as both teams went back an fourth taking shots trying to get one in the back of the net. The Bots were not ready to end this period as a 1 goal game though as Johnson busted down the ice and put it on net where Point tapped it home to give the Bolts a 2-0 lead!

Second Period

The Bolts picked things up right where they left off as they dominated offensive zone time looking to extend their lead. The Oilers looked to make a push back but not only would they have to go through Vasy but McDonagh too, as he swiped a puck away that nearly crossed the line saving a goal. JT Miller then got 2 for interference giving the Oilers a chance to get on the board through the power play. The Oilers had the puck in the Bolts zone for the entire penalty but Vasy and the Bolts PK unit kept the puck out of the net. Miller than nearly put the Bolts up by 3 as he hit the top of the crossbar. The Bolts would head right back to the PK though as Point was called for tripping. Seconds later McDavid was then called for holding to make it a 4 on 4. As time winded down on the 4 on 4 the Oilers made one last push and it was Rattie who fired it home to cut the Bolts lead to 1. The penalties would then end and the Bolts looked to get back their 2 goal lead. Luckily they would succeed as McDonagh ripped one from the point and Gourde redirected one home to make it 3-1 Bolts. Tensions remained high as Paquette and Strome went at it and both got 2 for roughing. Just as the 4 on 4 was about to expire Stamkos found Kucherov in the circle where he rifled one home to make it 4-1 Bolts. Stralman was then called for slashing but Cooper was heated as Point was elbowed right in front of an official and no call was made. But none the less it was an Oilers power play giving them one last chance before the end of the period. Then just as the period, expired Vasy made a toe save stretching all the way out to keep the Oilers off the board, an unbelievable save!

Third Period

The Bolts would start things off on the penalty kill and the Oilers would make them pay as Draisaitl snapped one home to cut the Bolts lead in half. The Bolts quickly got back to controlling the pace though as they did not let the Oilers run with their newfound momentum. The Bolts would then head to the powerplay as Larson was called for hooking. With 24 seconds to go, Matt Benning was then called for slashing to give the Bolts a 5 on 3. The Bolts would not be able to convert on the 5 on 3 but not too long after it was Kucherov who rifled his second of the night home to give the Bolts a 5-2 lead. Things continued to get heated as Lucic who was still upset about an earlier hit ran over Joseph and stayed overtop of him pushing his head down. Multiple fights broke out before everyone was separated and things were calmed down. Lucic would be given 2 for Interference 2 for roughing and a 10 min misconduct. The Bolts would not be able to capitalize on the long power play but killed lots of time. Kuch then got 2 for hooking giving the Oilers another chance on the power play. The Bolts would once again kill it off though as time began to run out for the Oilers down by 3. The Oilers grabbed a few more chances but it was nowhere near enough as the Bolts won this one by a score of 5-2.

Up Next and Final Strike

Another great game overall by the Bolts tonight. While this wasn’t the most dominant performance by the Bolts it was the most consistent. The Bolts got off to a good start which they have struggled with before. The Bolts star players showed up in a big way while Vasy and special teams did what they do best. The Bolts turned things around quickly each time they made a mistake never letting this game get out of control. The Bolts could be a little more disciplined but a great game none the less.

The Bolts will look to continue their 3 game winning streak as they take on the New York Islanders Thursday, November 8th at 7:30 PM in Amalie Arena.
