Bolts Extinguish the Flames!

By: Jake Ricker

Overview

The Bolts offense was out to shine tonight as they put up 6 total goals. As a surprise to no one Vasy once again made stop after stop shutting down the opposition. As for the Flames, they could not slow down the Bolts and gave them way too many opportunities. The Bolts quickly ran away with this one and played one of their best games since the break. The Bolts got another 2 points against a top 3 team and continue their dominance. Let’s take a look at how we got here period by period.

First Period

Both teams got off to a quick start as they knew this would be a fast pace game. The Flames would be the first though to get some consistent zone time. However, they failed to get much to the net, and Vasy turned them away. The Bolts then quickly responded with some pressure of their own, but this time Riddick made sure the pucks stayed out. The Bolts continued to apply some pressure and even rang one off the post that nearly got them on the board. The Bolts would then get the first power play opportunity as Kylington was called for holding. The Bolts power play got right to work and just under a min in Miller would find Point who blasted one in the slot to make it 1-0 Bolts! The Flames came back though with a strong push, but Vasy once again shut the door. The pace of the game seemed to pick up as both teams went back and forth. Calgary would make a costly mistake though as they tried to make a change and the Bolts forced a turnover. It was a 3 on 1 from there, and Paquette got the puck in the slot and fired it home for a 2-0 lead! The Bolts continued their push as not too long after it was Kuch who rifled one home for a now 3-0 Bolts lead. Unfortunately, the Bolts good vibes wouldn’t last forever as Paquette was called for roughing, and the Flames had their first PP of the night. Just seconds into the penalty Killorn would get called for hooking giving the Flames an extended 3 on 5. the Flames would quickly convert as Giordano would snap one from the point and cut the deficit to two. The Bolts would successfully kill off the second penalty and the period would end soon after.

Second Period

The Bolts looked to pick things right where they left off, but the Flames had other ideas. Both teams went back and forth looking to get some sustained pressure. The game picked up paces as the game went on for a few minutes with no stoppages. Both teams would pick up a few chances, but neither side could establish any consistent pressure. The Flames would finally get another one on the board as Monahan put one past Vasy to make it 3-2. Things then quickly picked up, and the Bolts were not too happy with a one-goal lead. Just a minute later Cirelli would find the puck right in front of the net and would tap it home, to regain the two-goal lead. Both teams continued to play very disciplined as neither team was called for a penalty with under 6 min to go. The Bolts would then get a pleasant surprise as Coburn took a quick shot and it deflected into the net for a 5-2 Bolts lead! The Flames would catch a  break towards the end of the period as Stralman was tripped, but no call was made. A Flames player then tripped over Stralman’s skate while he was down and he was somehow called for a trip, giving the Flames a power play. The Bolts would kill off the most of the penalty with just 47 seconds left on the call with the period ending.

Third Period

The Flames would start things out on a short power play but would not have much time to do anything as it quickly came to an end. The Bolts would then get another chance on the power play as Hathaway was called for tripping. The power play would be seconds away from ending, but Stamkos sent an absolute laser into the back of the net to make it 6-2 Bolts! The Bolts then began to run away with this one as they kept control of the puck for the majority of the period. The Flames continued to dig themselves a bigger hole as Mangiapane was called for high-sticking. Things didn’t get any better as Frolik was called for another hgh-stick. The Flames would kill the first penalty and quickly start working on the second. Luckily the Flames were able to kill the other penalty off as well getting back to full strength. The Flames luck would turn as McDonagh was then called for hooking. The Flames would finally get another one on the board after a great passing play that Monahan put home. However, the Flames still trailed by 3 and had a lot of work to do. Time would quickly wind down, and Bolts continued to shut down the Flames. Time would then run out for the Flames, and the Bolts would get the win 6-3!

Up Next and Final Strike

The Bolts played one of their best games since the all-star break. The offense showed up in a big way scoring 6 goals. The power play also went 2 for 4 and Vasy had another excellent game. The Bolts played a full 60 min which as another good step for the Bolts as they had not done that recently. The Bolts defense also did well as they held the flames to just 22 shots on goal. This was a dominant performance by the Bolts and we hope to see this in the future!

The Bolts will look to make it 4 in a row as they take on the Dallas Stars inside Amalie Arena on Thursday, February 12th, at 7:30 Pm.
