Alexander (The Great?) Volkov
By Monika Cook
After picking Callan Foote in the 1st Round of the 2017 draft, the Tampa Bay Lightning shocked their fans by selecting Alexander Volkov. Â Volkov19-year-old old RW from Russia, weighing 192 lbs at the height of 6’1″.
For his 2016-17 season:
MHL: 16 games played regular season, 6 goals & 5 assists, and 12 penalty minutes. Playoffs- 4 games played, 2 goals & 2 assists, and 2 penalty minutes. He ends the season with a +/- of 6 regular and -1 playoff.
VHL: 15 games played regular season, 3 goals, and 4 penalty minutes. Playoffs- 8 games, 1 goal & 2 assists, and 6 penalty minutes. He ends the season with a +/- of 2 regular season and -3 playoffs.
Alexander also played in the Russian Selects U20 for 6 games, adding 3 assists.
His previous year looked a little better, as he played strictly in the MHL for 42 games, scoring 16 goals and 11 assists. He notched 34 penalty minutes this year as well.
Volkov was a shock for Tampa fans, as he was barely ranked by many people, but ranked #67 Midterm and #27 final for European skaters. From what I have read online, Volkov seems to be the playmaker type of forward, whether it is to set someone else up or to score himself. He is noted for his goal in a series-clinching win during the quarterfinals of the Gagarin Cup, sparking a rally vs. Red Army with a goal, and also playing in the Russia vs Canada series. Â He is eligible to play in the AHL the 2017-18 season (high hopes to see him here in Syracuse personally), so fans will have to be on the lookout for this young forward at the Development Camp happening in Tampa on June 27th-July 1st. Volkov will hopefully prove that he is a hidden gem and a steal by the Lightning, making him Alexander the Great.
