Ducks Bring Back Brown
By Michael Walters
Today the Anaheim Ducks announced the hiring of Newell Brown as an assistant coach. This will be his third stint with the organization. He was an assistant from 1999-2000 and again from 2005-10. He was part of the 2007 Stanley Cup championship team.
He was assistant coach with Vancouver from 2010-13. The Canucks won two President Trophies during that time and made it to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. He then was an assistant coach with the Arizona Coyotes until 2017 when he returned back to Vancouver for the past four seasons.
Brown has been known for his power play strategies and was brought on to help the Ducks with their man advantage woes. The Vancouver power play was ranked 25th(17.4%) in 2020-21, 4th(24.2%) in 2019-20, tied for 22nd(17.1%) in 2018-19, and 9th (21.5%) in 2017-18. It terms of goals for per 60 minutes, the power play has ranked 20th, 30th, 23rd, and 21st in those last four seasons in expected goals per 60.
Part of Brown’s mindset on the power play is to use multiple strategies. He likes to set up the configuration based on the players on the unit and where they feel conformable playing. He also studies what the opponents do to defend against the power play and likes to adjust the power play as a result. Lastly he emphasizes shooting the puck more, instead of passing and trying to get a perfect shot.
Brown joins Geoff Ward and Mike Stothers as the new assistant coaches for the Ducks next season. General Manager Bob Murray is bringing back Brown again, which he has been known to do before(see Randy Carlyle), so it will be interesting to see how he fits amongst the staff next season.
