Ducks Select Mason McTavish 3rd Overall
By Michael Walters
The Buffalo Sabres selected Owen Power first overall, which wasn’t a surprise. The Seattle Kraken then selected Matthew Beniers with their second overall pick. With the 3rd overall pick the Anaheim Ducks selected Mason McTavish.
According to several scouting reports, McTavish can shoot the puck from anywhere on the ice and create scoring opportunities. He is physical at 6’1, 196 pounds and will go into the corners wearing down defenders. He will battle for the puck against the boards and has a competitive edge to his game. On the power play, he usually plays the slot creating quality scoring chances.
He is a good puck handler and has decent size which helps with taking and giving contact. He has a good vision for the ice and hockey IQ. He is a solid two-way player as he has solid positioning and will block shot attempts. He can play center and wing.
In terms of areas of concern, he can sometimes get too puck focused and will delay his passes. His transition game needs some work as his stride in the neutral zone and his acceleration could be better.
Some comparable players are Jamie Benn, Tomas Hertl, and Bo Horvat. He stated he has looked up to and focused on players like Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan O’Reilly, and Brayden Schenn.
