Ducks Select Olen Zellweger In Round 2
By Michael Walters
The Anaheim Ducks selected defenseman Olen Zellweger with their 2nd round pick, 34th overall.
According to several scouting reports, Zellweger brings a solid two-way game and play making ability. He is a good puck handler and will carry the puck through the neutral zone bringing a quick transition game to his play. He is a left handed defenseman, but can also play on the right side.
He was one of the top producing WHL defensemen with 13 points(2 goals + 11 assists) in 11 games during the abbreviated season. He was tied for the lead in points(8) among defensemen at the 2021 U18 World Championship. Mike Stothers coached him at the tournament en route to a gold medal and used him heavily as the quarterback on the power play. Stothers as a new Ducks assistant coach is already starting to provide some influence by bringing Zellweger in.
One concern to his game has been his shot accuracy. He worked on his shot while at home during the lockdown as shown below.
Some other concerns are his positioning as he will pinch too low and get trapped deep in the offensive zone. His size and upper body strength is a concern as he stands 5’9′ and weighs 175.
He has been compared to Samuel Girard.
